Smart-meter displays, connected gateways and property energy data
Carlo Gavazzi supplies energy meters, analysers and automation components, with direct-connected and transformer-input metering families.
Carlo Gavazzi's energy-meter range separates direct-connected instruments from transformer-input analysers. That distinction is more useful for selecting hardware than a comparison based only on the number of displayed measurements. Its EM530 and EM540 overview presents the two approaches within closely related products, making the current-input choice particularly clear.
A complete selection also includes communications and any approval required for the measurement's purpose. The EM340 datasheet shows that output and approval are ordering options. A meter used for internal energy trends and one used for an applicable billing requirement may therefore need different variants, even where the front panel and family name look similar.
The EM340 is a three-phase DIN-rail meter with direct current measurement up to 65 A. Its options include pulse output, RS-485 Modbus and M-Bus. The same datasheet distinguishes MID options from non-certified variants, so the family name alone does not establish a particular approval.
The EM530/EM540 comparison separates EM530 transformer-input measurement from EM540 direct connection. The cited EM530 ordering code specifically names a 5 (6) A input and RS-485 Modbus RTU. That gives an installer and integrator a much firmer starting point than “Carlo Gavazzi meter”: it identifies both the electrical input and the communications expected by the receiving system.
The EM530/EM540 manual is the relevant device-level reference for setup and operation of those families. For a serial integration, the installed ordering code and communications settings need to stay attached to the register mapping. An electrical-input difference and a protocol difference are separate dimensions of compatibility.
Carlo Gavazzi's newer EM600-series announcement describes EM630 B and EM640 B as a new generation of connected energy analysers. That does not make older EM340 or EM530 configurations interchangeable with them. Model-specific documentation should govern the data path, while the broader product history helps a buyer understand which generation and installation requirement they are comparing.
The manufacturer's EM530/EM540 product comparison highlights direct measurement for smaller circuits and current-transformer measurement for larger currents. Those choices fit distribution panels and submetering projects where the physical current path and the available enclosure space strongly influence the specification. The external transformers are part of the measurement system, not just accessories selected after the meter.
Carlo Gavazzi's wider group profile places energy measurement within its automation-components business. That is useful context for industrial and building projects combining several component types. It should not be interpreted as a promise that every automation component provides the same measured quantities or communications interface as an energy analyser.
Carlo Gavazzi's published corporate history dates the business to 1931. Its contact information distinguishes Carlo Gavazzi Holding AG in Steinhausen, Switzerland, from Carlo Gavazzi Automation SpA in Lainate, Italy, which handles product-related enquiries. The headquarters fact here refers to the group.
That distinction avoids treating the location of one product organisation as the headquarters of the whole group. The technical scope of this profile is narrower than the full corporation: it concerns named energy-meter and analyser families with publicly available device documentation. Product selection should therefore follow those documented variants, rather than a group-wide statement about automation capability.
