IKEA INSPELNING

Smart plug with energy metering

IKEA's energy-monitoring smart plug: it switches one appliance and reports power, voltage, current and energy over Zigbee. The EU type E2206 is rated 16 A and 3680 W for resistive loads and 300 W for motors.

Also sold asE2206 (EU)E2220 (US)E2223 (UK)E2224 (CH)

Smart plug with energy metering

Compatibility

Compatible with EpiSensor Edge over Zigbee.

Pair it with the Zigbee radio on an EpiSensor Gateway. Edge reads it locally on the Gateway.

Edge reads 9 values from it, listed under Interface.

Connect it with

Specifications

IKEA sells it for its DIRIGERA hub and app, and says it cannot be connected to the older TRÅDFRI gateway. Over Zigbee it reports active power, voltage, current and cumulative energy, can be switched on and off, and has settings for its behaviour after a power cut, a button lock and its LED. Firmware updates are delivered over Zigbee.245

Where it is used

  • Plug-in fridges, freezers and bottle coolers in staff rooms, shops and cafés, where each appliance's consumption and duty cycle is worth seeing on its own.

    Refrigeration energy monitoring
  • Switching printers, screens and kitchen appliances off out of hours across a group of sites, with each plug's energy showing the saving.

    Multi-site energy monitoring
  • A trial of plug-load metering before a site commits to meters on its distribution boards.

The plug changes the divisor it applies to active power as the load changes. The divisor is reported whenever it changes, and a power value is only right when it is scaled by the divisor current at the time.5

On firmware older than 2.4.25 the LED setting works the other way round: setting it turns the LED off rather than on.6

IKEA's own app shows energy only through the DIRIGERA hub. On an EpiSensor Gateway the plug's metering clusters are read directly, with no IKEA hub involved.15

Setup

  1. Factory reset it if it was used before

Push the reset button with a pointed object for at least 5 seconds until the LED starts pulsating.1

  2. Open pairing in Edge

In Edge, open pairing on the Gateway's Zigbee network, with the plug within its 10 m open-air range of the Gateway or a Zigbee router.

  3. Start pairing

Press the pairing button, in the small hole below the round on/off button, with a needle or paperclip for about two seconds.4

  4. Check the identity

Confirm that the plug reports its model as INSPELNING Smart plug. All four regional types report that same model ID, so the type (E2206, E2220, E2223 or E2224) is not visible over Zigbee.5

  5. Check one reading

Plug in a load of known rating, switch it on from Edge, and compare the power reading with the rating at a low and a high load, since the plug rescales power as the load changes.5
