Does VINDSTYRKA need an IKEA hub to work with Edge?

No. IKEA says it works on its own or connected to a hub, and it joins a standard Zigbee coordinator directly. It pairs with the Zigbee radio on an EpiSensor Gateway without DIRIGERA or the IKEA Home smart app.

What does the VOC index mean?

It is a relative index, not a concentration. 100 is the sensor’s learned average; lower values mean fewer volatile organic compounds than usual and higher values mean more. Use it to see changes in one room over time.

How often does it report PM2.5?

At least every 2 minutes, and sooner when PM2.5 changes by 2 µg/m³ or more, but not more often than once a minute. Values are whole numbers.

Does it run on batteries?

No. It needs a 5 V, 1 A USB supply on its USB-C socket, which IKEA sells separately. It draws 0.5 W.

Where should it not be installed?

IKEA rates it for indoor use at 0 to 40 °C. Keep it away from wet, damp or very dusty areas, direct sunlight and heat sources, and do not block the air intake and outlet on the back.

VINDSTYRKA is IKEA’s air quality sensor, type E2112. It measures fine particles (PM2.5), total volatile organic compounds, room temperature and relative humidity, and shows all four on its own display. The particle sensor covers 0 to 1000 µg/m³. On the display, IKEA colours PM2.5 green from 0 to 35 µg/m³, yellow from 35 to 120 µg/m³ and red above 120 µg/m³, and shows an arrow for whether VOC levels are rising, stable or falling.^1, 2

PM2.5 is set to report at least every 2 minutes, and no more often than once a minute, when it changes by 2 µg/m³ or more.⁴

Readings can be wrong for the first few minutes after power-up, with temperature often reading high, and settle without intervention.³

It cannot join an IKEA TRÅDFRI gateway. That does not affect a Zigbee coordinator such as the EpiSensor Gateway.^2, 3

Setup

Open pairing in Edge
In Edge, open pairing on the Gateway’s Zigbee network. Place the sensor within 10 m of the Gateway or a mains-powered Zigbee router for the join.¹
Power it
Connect a 5 V, 1 A USB power supply to the USB-C socket with a cable no longer than 3.0 m.¹
Reset it into pairing
Quick-press the pairing button 4 times. This factory resets the sensor, and the link icon on the display blinks while it looks for a network.¹
Confirm the join
The link icon stops blinking when the sensor has joined. Check that Edge identifies it as IKEA E2112.³
Check the readings
Wait a few minutes for the readings to settle, then compare PM2.5, temperature and humidity in Edge with the sensor’s own display.³
