Dixell XR60CX

Refrigeration controller

The Dixell XR60CX controls the compressor, fan and defrost of a ventilated cabinet or cold room. It has no RS485 terminals: Dixell's XJ485-CX converter plugs into the HOT KEY connector and turns the controller's TTL line into RS485. With that converter it is compatible with EpiSensor Edge over Modbus RTU through a ZMB Modbus interface, and EpiSensor's Modbus profile reads the room and evaporator probes, setpoint and differential.

Compatibility

Compatible with EpiSensor Edge over Modbus RTU through an XJ485-CX converter and a ZMB Modbus interface

Dixell documents a TTL serial line on the XR60CX's HOT KEY connector that connects to a Modbus RTU monitoring system through the external XJ485-CX TTL to RS485 converter. A ZMB-31 or ZMB-30 on the converter's RS485 side reads the controller and sends the values to the Gateway running Edge. The addresses come from EpiSensor's Modbus profile for the XR60CX.

Fit the XJ485-CX in the HOT KEY connector and set Adr first; an X-REP display on that connector excludes the serial line. Dixell's manual prints no register table, so compare the room probe with the display once. Setpoint and parameter writes stay with the refrigeration contractor.

The connector cannot carry an X-REP display and the serial line at once. The customer-platform output is optional; Edge remains the local system of record.

Assessment

XR60CX with an XJ485-CX converter on the HOT KEY connector, read with EpiSensor's Modbus profile. Relay, alarm and door states are outside this starter map.

InteroperabilitySupported with conditions
Dixell documents Modbus RTU through the XJ485-CX. The register addresses come from EpiSensor's profile, not a published Dixell table.16
AccuracySupported with conditions
Dixell states ±0.7 °C ±1 digit and 0.1 °C resolution. The room probe is placed for control, so a product record needs an independent probe.1
SecurityNot yet assessed
The manual describes a keyboard lock but no protection on the serial line.1
ReliabilityLimited
The serial line depends on an external converter in a shared connector, and Dixell does not document the converter's supply or diagnostics.12
RuggednessSupported with conditions
IP65 front and IP20 body, rated 0 to 60 °C; the converter sits behind the panel.1
ScalabilitySupported with conditions
Each controller needs its own converter and a unique address from 1 to 247.1
LifecycleSupported with conditions
Copeland still hosts the XR60CX manual. The controller reports its parameter table code as Ptb, so record it with the firmware.1

Edge template

This JSON file supplies the register map. Applying it to an existing meter replaces its sensor list while retaining the site connection, unit ID and enable state.

Downloads need a signed-in account with Edge download access.

Use the template in Edge

  1. Import the JSON file

In Edge, open Settings, then Devices and Templates. Choose Import JSON and select the downloaded file. Confirm that the model and template name match your device.

  2. Load the map for your meter

For a new Modbus device, use Load Template before entering the manufacturer or model; it fills those fields and the register list. Set the name, site connection and unit ID, check the polling enable state, then test before saving. For an existing device, apply only to the matching model; this replaces its sensor list but retains its connection, unit ID and enable state.

  3. Test a reading

Use Test in the wizard and compare a known reading with the meter display. Check its unit, sign and scale, then confirm that timestamps keep advancing. These starter maps are read-only and leave exports off until you configure them.

Setup

Read the room probe through the XJ485-CX

EpiSensor's Modbus profile places the XR60CX room probe at holding register 264 (0x0108) as a signed value in tenths of a degree.

The XR60CX display, which shows the room probe by default

Acceptance: Accept the map when the room probe agrees with the display. The reply bytes are an example, not a captured reply. If the controller does not answer, check the converter is seated, Adr matches the request and the bus runs at 9600 bit/s.

  1. Free the HOT KEY connector

Check that no X-REP display or third probe uses the HOT KEY connector, then insert the XJ485-CX converter.

  2. Set the address

Set Adr (1 to 247) to a unique address for the bus. Check rES: the tenths decode applies with rES = dE in °C.

  3. Wire the converter to the ZMB

Connect the XJ485-CX RS485 (+) and (-) to the ZMB with shielded twisted pair, terminate the bus, and set the ZMB to 9600 bit/s, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit.

  4. Read the room probe once

Read holding register 264 (0x0108) with FC03 and divide by 10. Compare it with the controller display. Then add the evaporator probe, Hy and the setpoint.

  5. Place the record probe

Fit an independent probe at the warmest product position, for example the ZMB-30's own probe, and set Edge alarm limits and delays to the site's HACCP plan.

Common questions

Does the XR60CX have RS485 terminals?
No. Its serial line is TTL on the HOT KEY connector. Dixell's XJ485-CX converter plugs into that connector and gives a two-wire RS485 output for a Modbus RTU master such as the ZMB.12
Can I keep the X-REP display and use Modbus?
No. Dixell's manual says the X-REP output excludes the serial connection, because both use the HOT KEY connector.1
Where do the register addresses come from?
From EpiSensor's Modbus profile for the XR60CX. Dixell's manual prints no register table, so compare the room probe with the display before saving the map.16
Will a ZMB-30 read the XR60CX?
Yes. A ZMB-30 reads the four starter points, and its own waterproof probe can measure the product zone independently of the controller.67
