Carel ir33+ platform

Refrigeration controller

The Carel ir33+ platform (ir33+, ir33+ wide, ir33+ small wide, easy wide and easy small wide) controls stand-alone refrigeration units and cold rooms. With an IROPZ48500 or IROPZ485S0 serial card it is compatible with EpiSensor Edge over Modbus RTU through a ZMB Modbus interface. Carel's manual prints the Modbus address of every probe, alarm and relay status, and EpiSensor's Modbus profile reads probe 1 and probe 2 at the same addresses.

Compatibility

Compatible with EpiSensor Edge over Modbus RTU through an IROPZ485 card and a ZMB Modbus interface

Carel documents automatic CAREL or Modbus recognition on the ir33+ and ir33 universale and prints a Modbus column for every supervisory variable. The RS485 port is a plug-in IROPZ48500 or IROPZ485S0 card in the programming key connector. A ZMB-31 or ZMB-30 on that card reads the controller and sends the values to the Gateway running Edge.

Fit the serial card and set the H0 (ir33+) or c32 (universale) address first. The ir33+ and universale maps differ, so pick the map for the installed model and compare probe 1 with the display once. Defrost, AUX, light and on/off commands stay with the refrigeration contractor.

Plug the serial card into the controller's programming key connector and wire its Tx/Rx+ and Tx/Rx- to the ZMB. The IROPZ485S0 detects reversed polarity by itself. Set the ZMB to 19200 bit/s, 8 data bits and no parity and poll the controller's H0 or c32 address. A ZMB reads 8 or more registers, up to 16 or more depending on the model, so check the 11-point ir33+ starter map against the model you fit. The ZMB-30 also adds its own waterproof probe. The customer-platform output is optional; Edge remains the local system of record.

Assessment

ir33+ platform (IREV ir33+, wide, small wide, easy wide, easy small wide) and ir33 universale controllers with an IROPZ485 serial card. The earlier ir33 platform has no published table.

InteroperabilityWell supported
Carel prints a Modbus column for every supervisory variable on the ir33+ and universale, and EpiSensor's Modbus profile confirms the ir33+ probe addresses.124
AccuracySupported with conditions
Carel states probe range and error per probe type. The control probe is placed for control, so a product-temperature record needs an independent probe.1
SecurityNot yet assessed
The manuals describe a keypad password but no protection on the serial port.1
ReliabilityWell supported
The controller exposes probe fault, EEPROM and RTC alarms over Modbus, so Edge can tell a failed probe from a warm cabinet. Carel fits a watchdog and rides through brief power interruptions.1
RuggednessWell supported
IP65 front on a smooth panel, -10 to 60 °C operation and flush buttons for cleaning.1
ScalabilitySupported with conditions
Each controller needs its own card and a unique address from 0 to 207 on the bus. A ZMB reads 8 or more registers, up to 16 or more depending on the model, so count the points of each controller that shares one interface.15
LifecycleSupported with conditions
Carel publishes the ir33+ manual (rel. 1.1, 2017). The earlier ir33 platform is documented without a variable table, so record the part number.13

Edge templates

This JSON file supplies the register map. Applying it to an existing meter replaces its sensor list while retaining the site connection, unit ID and enable state.

Downloads need a signed-in account with Edge download access.

Use the template in Edge

  1. Import the JSON file

In Edge, open Settings, then Devices and Templates. Choose Import JSON and select the downloaded file. Confirm that the model and template name match your device.

  2. Load the map for your meter

For a new Modbus device, use Load Template before entering the manufacturer or model; it fills those fields and the register list. Set the name, site connection and unit ID, check the polling enable state, then test before saving. For an existing device, apply only to the matching model; this replaces its sensor list but retains its connection, unit ID and enable state.

  3. Test a reading

Use Test in the wizard and compare a known reading with the meter display. Check its unit, sign and scale, then confirm that timestamps keep advancing. These starter maps are read-only and leave exports off until you configure them.

Setup

Read probe 1 on an ir33+

Carel's ir33+ table gives probe 1 reading as analogue variable 4 with Modbus number 4, in tenths of a degree.

Request PDU
03 00 04 00 01
Address
Modbus 4 = PDU 0x0004, one register; EpiSensor's Modbus profile reads probe 1 here
Decode
Signed 16-bit, divide by 10: a synthetic reply of 00 21 is 33, which is 3.3 °C
Second check
03 00 10 00 01 reads the setpoint St at 16; it matches St on the display

Acceptance: Accept the map when probe 1 and the setpoint agree with the display. The reply bytes are an example, not a captured reply. If probe 1 reads the setpoint, the controller is a universale: use its map.

  1. Identify the model and fit the card

Read the part number: IREV for the ir33+ range, or an ir33 universale. Plug an IROPZ48500 or IROPZ485S0 card into the programming key connector with the controller off.

  2. Set the address

Set H0 on the ir33+ (default 1) or c32 on the universale to a unique address on the bus. The protocol is recognised automatically.

  3. Wire the bus to the ZMB

Connect the card's Tx/Rx+ and Tx/Rx- to the ZMB with shielded twisted pair, terminate both ends, and set the ZMB to 19200 bit/s, 8 data bits, no parity.

  4. Read probe 1 once

On the ir33+ read holding register 4 with FC03; on the universale read register 2. Divide by 10 and compare with the display. Then read the setpoint at 16 and compare it with St.

  5. Apply the map for the model

Import the ir33+ or universale template and name probes after their installed function (control, product, defrost, condenser).

  6. Place the record probe

Fit an independent probe at the warmest product position for the temperature record and set Edge alarm limits and delays to the site's HACCP plan.

Common questions

Are the ir33+ and ir33 universale maps the same?
No. On the ir33+ probe 1 is at 4 and the setpoint at 16; on the universale probe 1 is at 2 and set point 1 at 4. Read the model from the part number and apply the matching map.12
Can Edge see door openings and defrosts?
Yes, on the ir33+, as coils read with FC01. Door status is digital variable 37, defrost status 31 and the door-open-too-long alarm 25. The starter template reads the analogue values only, so add these coils to the device in Edge where a site needs them; they explain temperature excursions in the record.1
Can one ZMB read the whole ir33+ map?
Usually. A ZMB reads 8 or more Modbus registers, up to 16 or more depending on the model, and the starter map has 11 points. On a model with fewer, read probe 1, the setpoint and the high alarm threshold first. The ZMB-30 also has its own waterproof temperature probe for the product.5
What about the earlier ir33 and ir33 power?
Carel's earlier ir33 manual confirms Modbus with the same IROPZ48500 card but prints no variable table. EpiSensor's Modbus profile for an IR33 reads probe 1 at 4 and probe 2 at 5, the ir33+ addresses, so start there and compare with the display.34
