Victron Energy Quattro

Battery inverter/charger

Quattro is a 3 to 15 kVA battery inverter/charger with two AC inputs and an integrated transfer switch, often fed by grid and generator. It talks VE.Bus, not Modbus. A Victron GX device on its VE.Bus port serves the com.victronenergy.vebus registers over Modbus TCP, and Edge reads them, including register 29, which says which AC input is active.

Compatibility

Compatible with EpiSensor Edge over Modbus TCP through a Victron GX device

Victron's GX Modbus TCP register list 3.81, revision 54, defines the com.victronenergy.vebus registers for Multis and Quattros, including active input and per-input energy counters, with scale factors and the unit ID mapping. The GX device is the Modbus TCP server on port 502; Edge reads it as a client.

Quattro 230 V models 12/3000/120-50/50 to 48/15000/200-100/100 on the VE.Bus port of a GX device, read with register list 3.81 revision 54. Site check: confirm the VE.Bus unit ID under Available services, then compare active input and AC input voltage with the GX display. Read-only: current limits, switch position, generator selection and ESS setpoints stay unwritten.

Connect the first or last Quattro of the VE.Bus system to a GX VE.Bus port with a standard RJ45 UTP cable. Victron does not allow direct third-party VE.Bus connections, so the GX is the interface. Enable its Modbus TCP server with read-only access, note the VE.Bus unit ID under Available services and point Edge at the GX on port 502. The customer-platform output is optional; Edge remains the local system of record.

Interface

Documented measurements and integration boundaries for Quattro.

  • Address convention: the register list's Address column is the data address in the request, and the value is divided by the Scalefactor column. A Scalefactor of 0.1 multiplies by 10.
  • Source selection, unit = VE.Bus service: active input at 29 (uint16: 0 AC input 1, 1 AC input 2, 240 disconnected), AC input 1 ignored at 69 and AC input 2 ignored at 70 (0 not ignored, 1 ignored), and remote generator selected at 104.
  • AC input of the active source: voltage L1 to L3 at 3 to 5 (uint16, scale 10, V), current at 6 to 8 (int16, scale 10, A; positive from the source into the Quattro), frequency at 9 to 11 (int16, scale 100, Hz) and power at 12 to 14 (int16, scale 0.1, W).
  • AC output: voltage at 15 to 17, current at 18 to 20 (positive to the load), frequency at 21 and power at 23 to 25 (int16, scale 0.1, W).
  • DC side: battery voltage at 26 (uint16, scale 100, V), battery current at 27 (int16, scale 10, A; positive into the DC system), battery temperature at 61 (int16, scale 10, °C).
  • State and alarms: VE.Bus SoC at 30 (uint16, scale 10, %), VE.Bus state at 31, VE.Bus error at 32, grid lost alarm at 64 (0 OK, 2 alarm) and the temperature, low-battery and overload alarms at 34 to 36.
  • Per-input energy counters, uint32, scale 100, kWh: AC-In 1 to AC-out at 74, AC-In 1 to battery at 76, AC-In 2 to AC-out at 78, AC-In 2 to battery at 80, battery to AC-out at 90. They are volatile and reset when the Quattro is switched off or the GX reboots.
  • System service at unit ID 100: active input source at 826 (int16: 1 grid, 2 generator, 3 shore power, 240 not connected), genset power L1 to L3 at 823 to 825 and grid power L1 to L3 at 820 to 822 (int16, W).
  • Writable registers include 22 (input current limit), 33 (switch position), 37 to 41 (ESS setpoints), 103 (select remote generator) and 62 (any write resets VE.Bus). Edge does not write them; control is outside this guide.

Assessment

Quattro 230 V 3 to 15 kVA models on the VE.Bus port of a GX device, read with register list 3.81 revision 54. Source selection, current limits and ESS control are excluded.

InteroperabilitySupported with conditions
Victron publishes registers, scale factors, signs, unit IDs, port and function codes. A GX device is required between the Quattro and Edge.123
AccuracySupported with conditions
Active input, per-phase input and output values and per-input energy counters are defined. Power registers have a 10 W step, input registers follow whichever source is active, and the counters are volatile.1
SecuritySupported with conditions
The GX Modbus TCP server is off by default and can be set to read-only access. No client authentication is documented, so it belongs on a protected network.25
ReliabilitySupported with conditions
Gateway exception codes separate an unmapped unit ID from a missing device, and a grid lost alarm is exposed. The datasheet lists output short-circuit, overload, battery voltage and temperature protection.124
RuggednessLimited
IP20 with pollution degree 2 and -20 to +60 °C operation: the Quattro needs a dry, enclosed location.4
ScalabilitySupported with conditions
Up to 4 sets of three 15 kVA units give 180 kVA and still read as one VE.Bus service. A GX connects one VE.Bus system directly.246
LifecycleWell supported
The register list carries a numbered revision history and keeps the older fixed unit IDs beside the dynamic scheme.1

Setup

Read which AC input is active, then the source type

Register list 3.81 revision 54 puts Active input at com.victronenergy.vebus address 29 (uint16, 0 AC input 1, 1 AC input 2, 240 disconnected) and Active input source at com.victronenergy.system address 826, unit ID 100 (int16, 1 grid, 2 generator, 3 shore power, 240 not connected). The response bytes are a synthetic decoder check, not a captured reply.

Target
GX IP address, TCP port 502; the VE.Bus unit ID from Available services (preferred 227 on a Cerbo GX), then unit ID 100
Active input request PDU
03 00 1D 00 01: FC03, address 29, one register, at the VE.Bus unit ID
Synthetic response PDU
03 02 00 01: value 1, so AC input 2 is active
Source type request PDU
03 03 3A 00 01: FC03, address 826, one register, at unit ID 100
Synthetic response PDU
03 02 00 02: value 2, so the active source is a generator
Voltage check
03 00 03 00 01 at the VE.Bus unit ID reads input voltage L1; a reply of 0x08FE is 2302, and 2302 / 10 = 230.2 V, Victron's own example
Acceptance
Keep the points when the active input, source type and voltage match the GX display, and when the values change as the source changes. A value of 240 is a disconnected input, not a fault in the read.

Acceptance: Matching values confirm the unit IDs and address convention. Map the input power, generator and grid points next, and record which physical source is wired to each AC input.

  1. Connect the VE.Bus system to the GX

Connect the first or last Quattro in the VE.Bus chain to a GX VE.Bus port with a standard RJ45 UTP cable. Keep VE.Bus separate from the GX Ethernet and VE.Can ports. A GX connects one VE.Bus system directly.

  2. Enable the Modbus TCP server, read-only

Under Settings > Integrations > Modbus TCP Server, enable the server, which is off by default, and set Access permissions to read-only. Older Venus OS menus place Modbus TCP under Services. The GX uses port 502.

  3. Find the VE.Bus unit ID

Available services lists every service with its unit ID. Unit IDs are dynamic since Venus 2.60 and normally equal the device instance; the register list's preferred ID for a Cerbo GX VE.Bus port is 227 and for a CCGX 246. Use unit ID 100 for the system values.

  4. Read the active source first

Read register 29 at the VE.Bus unit ID and register 826 at unit ID 100, as in the worked check. Together they say which input is live and whether it is the grid or the generator. Then read the block from 3 to 36 for input, output, battery and alarms, and add 64 for grid lost; registers 1 and 2 do not exist.

  5. Attribute energy to each source

The input registers at 3 to 14 always describe the active input. To split energy between grid and generator, use the per-input counters at 74 to 80, or log input power against register 29. The counters reset when the Quattro switches off or the GX reboots, so store them as a running total that can restart.

Common questions

How do I know whether a Quattro is on grid or generator over Modbus?
Register 29 on the VE.Bus service says whether AC input 1 or 2 is active, or 240 for disconnected. Register 826 on unit ID 100 names the source type, 1 grid, 2 generator or 3 shore power, from the GX system settings.1
Does the Quattro need a GX device for Modbus?
Yes. The Quattro has VE.Bus ports, and Victron does not allow direct third-party VE.Bus connections. The GX device is the Modbus TCP gateway on port 502.34
Can Edge read each Quattro of a three-phase system on its own?
No. Victron states that units configured for parallel or three-phase work cannot be addressed individually. The VE.Bus service reports per-phase values instead, for example input voltage at 3, 4 and 5.12
