Victron Energy: Modular inverter, battery and solar systems with GX monitoring

Victron Energy makes modular inverter, battery and solar equipment, with GX monitoring and control for off-grid, marine and energy-storage systems.

Summary

Best for
Combining battery storage, solar charging, generator support and local system control in one configurable installation.
Less suited to
A single finished battery appliance where the buyer wants no component selection or system commissioning.
Deployment
Inverters, chargers and battery equipment connected to a local GX controller, with optional internet-connected VRM monitoring.
Data in
Battery state, inverter and charger readings, energy flows and supported tank or environmental sensors, depending on connected equipment.
Pricing
Hardware is sold through dealers. The MultiPlus-II page identifies VRM app and portal access as free; installation and connectivity costs remain separate.

Overview

Victron Energy supplies the building blocks of a power system: inverter/chargers, solar charge controllers, battery monitors and communications equipment. Rather than presenting every installation as one fixed battery appliance, its catalogue supports combinations sized for the available supply, storage and loads. A boat using shore power and a remote building using a generator can therefore share parts of the same product ecosystem.

The Cerbo GX brings those components into a common monitoring and control view. It displays system power flows and battery condition, while also supporting functions such as generator start and stop, input-current limits and alarms.

Offering

The MultiPlus-II combines an inverter and battery charger with two AC outputs. Its PowerControl function reduces charging when the incoming supply would otherwise be overloaded; PowerAssist can supplement a limited shore or generator supply with battery power. The family supports parallel and three-phase arrangements for larger systems, subject to the appropriate configuration.

The Cerbo GX provides a separate communications centre running Venus OS. Optional GX Touch displays offer a local interface, while remote-console access allows configuration over the local network. Supported integrations include marine displays and Node-RED automation, giving installers several ways to present and coordinate the system.

Products and platforms

  1. GX Modbus TCP

    Integration interface

GX service exposing supported connected-device and system registers, with service-specific unit IDs.3

Technology

Victron publishes a GX Modbus TCP manual, including the addressing model and supported functions. The service is disabled by default. Once enabled, the GX device acts as a gateway to connected equipment: the unit ID selects a service or device, while the register address selects a parameter. Overall system data uses unit ID 100 in the documented mapping.

This is a useful route for an external PLC or monitoring system, but not a claim that every Victron component is itself a Modbus device. Available registers depend on connected equipment. Manufacturer protocol documentation alone does not establish a tested EpiSensor Edge integration.

Markets

The Cerbo GX applications span marine installations, energy storage, off-grid systems and hybrid generators. Their priorities differ: a boat may need tank levels and bridge-display integration, while a remote site may need solar-priority operation, quiet periods and generator warm-up or cool-down settings. The same controller can therefore serve different operational workflows.

For an energy-storage installation, the MultiPlus-II is a power-conversion component rather than a complete specification of battery capacity. Its product guidance describes ESS operation and local or internet-based monitoring through a GX device. Battery selection, inverter sizing and the site's supply arrangements remain part of the overall system design.

Company

Victron's company history statement records its founding in 1975 by Reinout Vader. Its current contact page places the business in Almere in the Netherlands. The long-running catalogue includes equipment for both mobile power and fixed installations, which helps explain the emphasis on combining charging sources, batteries and loads rather than assuming a permanent utility connection.

The MultiPlus-II support material links product manuals, system schematics and configuration guidance alongside the hardware. Sales and support are organised through dealers, with the original supplier identified as the route for dedicated support, repairs and warranty requests. That documentation and distribution model is relevant when choosing an installer as well as a product.
