Socomec COUNTIS E44
Three-phase energy meter
The COUNTIS E44 (reference 4850 3066) is the MID version of Socomec's COUNTIS E43/E44 three-phase energy meter. It measures a three-phase network with neutral through current transformers with a 1 A or 5 A secondary and a primary of up to 12000 A, counts imported and exported energy on four tariffs and has an RS-485 port running Modbus RTU. Socomec's E44 communication table lists decimal and hexadecimal addresses: voltages and frequency in hundredths, currents in mA, power in units of 10 W and energy in kWh or in 10 Wh steps, mostly as 32-bit values.
Compatibility
Compatible with EpiSensor Edge over Modbus RTU
The COUNTIS E44 is compatible with EpiSensor Edge over its RS-485 Modbus RTU port, read through a ZMB-31 Modbus Interface or a Gateway serial port. Socomec's manual documents Modbus RTU with function 3 reads, and its E44 communication table gives decimal and hexadecimal addresses, register counts, units and data types for every measurement.
COUNTIS E44, reference 4850 3066, with manual 547981C and the E44 communication table version 201.255. The non-MID COUNTIS E43 (4850 3065) shares the manual and RS-485 settings but has its own table. Site check: compare the first frequency read and one 32-bit voltage with the display. Read-only monitoring: no writes to the CT, address, tariff or reset registers. Socomec states that RS-485 data has no legal metrological value.

Specifications
Choose the COUNTIS E44 for a three-phase four-wire circuit measured through current transformers where the meter has to be MID approved and read over RS-485. It counts bidirectional active and reactive energy, total and partial, on four tariffs, and shows voltage, current, power, power factor and frequency on a backlit LCD. It powers itself from the measured voltage.1

Interface
Documented measurements and integration boundaries for COUNTIS E44.
- The table prints each address in decimal with its hexadecimal beside it: frequency 51287 is 0xC857 and goes on the wire as C8 57. Read with FC03, at most 128 registers, and keep each request inside one of the table's blocks.
- Frequency at 51287 (0xC857): one register, U16, hundredths of a hertz. The safest first read, because it needs no word order.
- Phase-to-phase voltage U12, U23 and U31 at 50514, 50516 and 50518, and phase-to-neutral voltage V1, V2 and V3 at 50520, 50522 and 50524: two registers each, U32, hundredths of a volt.
- Current I1, I2 and I3 at 50528, 50530 and 50532 and neutral current at 50534: two registers each, U32, mA, in the block Socomec marks as affected by the current transformers.
- Total active power at 50536 (S32, units of 10 W, signed for import and export), total reactive power at 50538 (S32, units of 10 var), total apparent power at 50540 (U32, units of 10 VA) and total power factor at 50542 (S32, divide by 1000; negative is leading, positive lagging).
- Per phase: active power at 50544, 50546 and 50548, reactive power at 50550 to 50554 and apparent power at 50556 to 50560, with the same units; power factor at 50562 to 50566.
- Total energy that cannot be reset: positive active (Ea+) at 50770 and negative active (Ea-) at 50776 in kWh, positive and negative reactive at 50772 and 50778 in kvarh, apparent at 50774 in kVAh. Two registers each, U32. Partial counters follow at 50780 to 50788.
- The same five totals in steps of 10 Wh, 10 varh and 10 VAh at 50946 (Ea+), 50948 (Er+), 50950 (Eap), 50952 (Ea-) and 50954 (Er-): two registers each, U32. Use these for interval data on small loads.
- Tariffs: the tariff in progress at 50849, then positive active energy for tariffs 1 to 4 at 50850, 50852, 50854 and 50856 (U32, kWh). The same counters in 10 Wh steps start at 51202.
- Energy per phase: positive active energy at 19843 (L1), 21891 (L2) and 23939 (L3), U32 in kWh, each followed by a one-register remainder in tenths of a watt-hour.
- Identity: 50000 holds "SOCO", 50006 the table version, 50007 the software version and 50050 the product name in eight registers. 40545 reads 1 on a MID product and 0 otherwise.
- Leave the settings and commands out of the poll: the CT secondary and primary at 57345 and 57346, the slave address at 58368, the tariff command at 40480 and the partial-energy resets at 57890, 57892 and 40512. The table gives the CT entries and the reset commands lock level NONE.
Assessment
COUNTIS E44, reference 4850 3066, with manual 547981C and the E44 communication table version 201.255. The non-MID COUNTIS E43 (4850 3065) shares the manual and RS-485 settings but has its own table. Site check: compare the first frequency read and one 32-bit voltage with the display. Read-only monitoring: no writes to the CT, address, tariff or reset registers. Socomec states that RS-485 data has no legal metrological value.
- InteroperabilitySupported with conditions
- Modbus RTU on RS-485 with function 3 reads is documented in the manual, and the E44 table gives decimal and hexadecimal addresses, register counts, units and data types. The table itself prints no word order, which comes from Socomec's type definitions in its current tables and needs one display check.123
- AccuracySupported with conditions
- MID meter with per-phase voltage, current and power, signed total power, import and export energy in 10 Wh steps and four tariffs, through CTs up to 12000 A. Accuracy also depends on the CTs and the programmed ratio, and RS-485 values are for information only, not legal metrology.12
- SecurityLimited
- The SET button is locked and the terminal covers sealed on a MID installation, but the table marks the CT ratio and reset commands writable with lock level NONE, and plain Modbus RTU has no authentication or encryption. Keep the bus private and the client read-only.12
- ReliabilitySupported with conditions
- Energy and settings are kept in FRAM, the display flags missing phases, reversed phase sequence and a meter malfunction, and the manual lists the EMC, low voltage and MID directives. No exception codes or response times are given; treat failed reads as missing data.1
- RuggednessSupported with conditions
- Rated -25 to +55 °C and up to 80 % humidity, mechanical class M1 and electromagnetic class E2, with a front IP51 and case IP20 for mounting inside a cabinet.1
- ScalabilitySupported with conditions
- Addresses 1 to 247, speeds up to 115200 bit/s, a 1/8 unit load and reads of up to 128 words are documented, with 32 devices over 1200 m per standard segment and repeaters beyond that. Bus loading and the poll list set the practical limit.1
Setup
Read frequency from decimal address 51287
The COUNTIS E44 communication table, version 201.255, lists frequency F at decimal 51287 (0xC857) in the block not affected by current and voltage transformers: one register, U16, unit Hz 10⁻². Use that map as the starting point and compare the result with the display.
- Request
- 01 03 C8 57 00 01 0B BA: Modbus address 1, FC03, start 0xC857, one register, RTU CRC. Change the first byte to the meter's Addr setting and recalculate the CRC.
- Address convention
- Send the table address as the zero-based PDU address: decimal 51287 goes on the wire as C8 57, the hexadecimal the table prints beside it. A client that numbers registers from one shows it as 51288, and a 4xxxx-style client may need 451288. Do not subtract one from the table value.
- Length and type
- One register, U16. A single register has no word order to get wrong, which is why this is the first read.
- Synthetic response
- 01 03 02 13 88 B5 12: two data bytes, 13 88.
- Decode
- 0x1388 is 5000; the unit is hundredths of a hertz, so 5000 / 100 = 50.00 Hz. The MID E44 works at 50 Hz ± 1 Hz.
- Acceptance
- Keep the point when it agrees with frequency on the display at the same time. If the meter returns exception 02, check the address convention and the installed reference before trying other points.
Acceptance: The response bytes are a synthetic decoder check, not a captured meter reply. A real reply must agree with the display before 32-bit voltage, current, power and energy points are enabled.
-
Identify the meter
Read COUNTIS E44 and the MID marking on the front, and the CT primary (CtP) and secondary (FSA) on the info menu. The info menu also shows both firmware versions and the installed communication port; record them with the configuration.
-
Read the serial settings in SETUP 2
Hold the button for three seconds to open SETUP 2 and note Addr, bAud, Prty and StoP. Enter the same values in the Edge serial client or the ZMB-31, then leave the menu without saving changes. Do not use the partial-energy reset items there.
-
Wire the RS-485 pair
Connect + to terminal 3 and - to terminal 2 with LiYCY shielded twisted pair, carry the shield through terminal 1, and fit a 120 Ω resistor at both ends of the line. On a MID installation, refit and seal the terminal covers and lock the SET button afterwards.
-
Make one frequency read
Send FC03 to address 51287 for one register and divide the result by 100, as in the worked read below. Compare it with frequency in the realtime menu.
-
Check the word order, then add points
Read V1 at 50520 as two registers, high word first, and compare it with the display. Then add current, power and the energy counters, log Ea+ and Ea- separately, and keep FC06 and FC16 out of the configuration.
Common questions
- What function code and word order does the E44 use?
- The manual lists function 3 to read up to 128 words, 6 to write one word and 16 to write several. The E44 table prints no word order; Socomec's current tables decode U32 and S32 values high word first and accept one table per request. Confirm the order on V1 at 50520 against the display before adding other 32-bit points.123
- Does the E44 make RS-485 energy data valid for billing?
- No. The manual's MID section says the information sent over RS-485 is for information only and has no legal value. MID use also needs a 3P+N network, sealed terminal covers and a locked SET button. Take billing readings from the meter's display, under your own billing process.1
- Which energy registers should I log?
- The totals at 50770 (Ea+) and 50776 (Ea-) cannot be reset but move in whole kWh. The same totals at 50946 and 50952 move in 10 Wh steps, which matches the meter's 10 Wh resolution and suits interval data. The partial counters at 50780 to 50788 can be reset from the meter or over Modbus, so keep them out of consumption records.12
- Which register block should I use for current and power?
- Use the 32-bit block from 50512, which Socomec marks as affected by the current and voltage transformers, so currents, powers and energy are on the primary side. The 16-bit block from 51280 is marked not affected by the transformers; use it for frequency, where the CT ratio makes no difference.2
- Is the tariff input a dry contact?
- No. With 0 V on terminals 6 and 7 the meter uses tariff 1, and 80 to 276 V AC or DC selects tariff 2. SETUP 1 chooses whether the input or the communication link sets the tariff; over Modbus all four tariffs are available. The tariff in progress is readable at 50849.12
