Huawei LUNA2000-215-2S10
Commercial battery energy storage system
LUNA2000-215-2S10 is Huawei's 215 kWh hybrid-cooled C&I smart string ESS with a 108 kW PCS2000-108K-MB1. Its rack control module connects over Ethernet to a SmartLogger3000, which manages each ESS in the array and connects to a third-party management system over Modbus TCP. Edge reads the SmartLogger's plant-level ESS registers: aggregated SOC, active ESS power, energy and capacity.
Compatibility
Compatible with EpiSensor Edge over Modbus TCP through the SmartLogger3000
Huawei's on-grid SmartLogger3000 solution manual has the SmartLogger connect to a third-party management system over Modbus TCP, and SmartLogger ModBus Interface Definitions issue 43 publishes plant-level ESS registers for SOC, SOH, power, energy and capacity. Edge is a Modbus TCP client and reads them. The cabinet also names Modbus TCP on its own Ethernet or fibre port, read from the project point map.
LUNA2000-215-2S10 in the LUNA2000-(107-241) family, user manual issue 20 and on-grid SmartLogger3000 solution manual issue 09. Site check: enable the SmartLogger's Modbus TCP link for the Gateway, read at logical device 0 and compare the first values with the SmartLogger WebUI. Units made in or before December 2024 lack on/off-grid switching and phase-level power limit control. Read-only monitoring; no startup, scheduling or power writes.

Interface
Documented measurements and integration boundaries for LUNA2000-215-2S10.
- SmartLogger, logical device 0, FC03: aggregated SOC 40515, SOH 40516 and SOE 40517 (U16, gain 10, %), active ESS power 40392 and reactive ESS power 40394 (I32, gain 1000, kW and kvar).
- SmartLogger ESS capacity: chargeable capacity 40480, dischargeable capacity 40482 and rated ESS capacity 40484 (U32, gain 1000, kWh), each the total of all ESSs; maximum ESS charge power 40490 and discharge power 40492 (U32, gain 1000, kW).
- SmartLogger ESS energy: energy charged today 40468 and discharged today 40470 (U32, gain 100, kWh). Total energy charged 40472 and discharged 40476 are 64-bit (I64, 4 registers), which Edge's Modbus client does not read; keep them in the SmartLogger or build totals in Edge from the daily counters.
- Values are big-endian, high byte and high word first (issue 43 section 5.2.3). The logger serial number 40713 is a 10-register string, which Edge's Modbus client does not decode; record it from the SmartLogger WebUI at commissioning.
- These are array totals. One SmartLogger managing several cabinets reports their sum, so record the cabinet count beside the reading. Issue 43 also documents ESS startup, shutdown and power adjustment registers; leave them unwritten, as control needs the site owner's and Huawei's agreement.
Assessment
LUNA2000-215-2S10 on a SmartLogger3000, user manual issue 20, on-grid solution manual issue 09 and SmartLogger ModBus Interface Definitions issue 43. The cabinet's own point map and all write registers are outside this scope.
- InteroperabilitySupported with conditions
- The SmartLogger's third-party Modbus TCP link and its plant-level ESS registers are documented. The cabinet's own map is project-supplied, so per-cabinet values need it.34
- AccuracySupported with conditions
- SOC, SOH, power, energy and capacity have stated types and gains, but they are array aggregates and the ESS power sign is not stated.4
- SecurityNot yet assessed
- Huawei's solution manual and SmartLogger map describe the third-party Modbus TCP link but not its authentication, encryption or read-only privilege separation.34
- ReliabilityLimited
- The datasheet and manual publish operating limits. Stale-data behaviour and concurrent-client limits on the SmartLogger link are not published.14
- RuggednessSupported with conditions
- IP55, -30 to 55 °C with derating above 50 °C and 4,000 m are published; the site and fire design remain authoritative.1
Setup
Read LUNA2000-215-2S10 SOC, power and capacity through the SmartLogger
A read-only start from SmartLogger ModBus Interface Definitions issue 43 (2023-10-21), which carries the plant-level ESS registers. The PDUs omit the MBAP header, which carries logical device 0. Response bytes are synthetic decoder checks, not captures from a site.
- Endpoint and unit
- SmartLogger IP address on its Modbus TCP link, logical device ID 0 (issue 43: 0 is the SmartLogger, 1 to 247 are inverters or other devices). Plant-level ESS registers answer only at 0.
- Function and address convention
- FC03: issue 43 says RO signals support only 0x03. Register numbers are wire addresses: aggregated SOC 40515 is sent as 0x9E43, with no offset. Data is big-endian, high word first.
- Aggregated SOC
- PDU 03 9E 43 00 01. Synthetic response PDU 03 02 02 E4: U16 740, gain 10, so 74.0 %.
- Active ESS power
- PDU 03 9D C8 00 02 reads 40392 and 40393. Synthetic data FF FF 3C B0 is I32 -50000, gain 1000, so -50.000 kW. Fix which sign means charging against a known charge before labelling it.
- Rated capacity and cabinet count
- PDU 03 9E 24 00 02 reads 40484 and 40485, the total rated capacity of all ESSs. Synthetic data 00 03 47 D8 is U32 215000, gain 1000, so 215.000 kWh: one 215.0 kWh cabinet. Two cabinets would read 430.000 kWh.
- Display comparison
- Compare SOC, power and capacity with the SmartLogger WebUI under Monitoring, ESS at the same minute. A value 10 or 1000 times off means the gain was not applied.
Acceptance: This reads the array through the SmartLogger3000 that manages the cabinet, using Huawei's published SmartLogger map. It is not a direct cabinet register map or a physical Edge test, and it writes nothing.
-
Identify the cabinet and the logger
Record the model and manufacturing date from the nameplate, the number of cabinets on the SmartLogger, and the SmartLogger model and software. LUNA2000-215-2S10 units made in or before December 2024 lack on/off-grid switching and phase-level power limit control.
-
Connect the Gateway to the SmartLogger
Put the Gateway on the SmartLogger's protected network. In web commissioning, step 7 connects the SmartLogger to a third-party management system: select Modbus TCP and set the parameters described in the SmartLogger3000 user manual. Allow only the Gateway's address.
-
Read plant-level ESS values
Use FC03 at logical device 0, the SmartLogger itself. Read aggregated SOC 40515 and active ESS power 40392, then rated ESS capacity 40484 to confirm the cabinet count, as the worked read shows.
-
Fix the sign and compare
Issue 43 describes 40392 as the actual active output power of the ESS devices. Read it during a known charge and record which sign means charging. Compare SOC and power with the SmartLogger WebUI under Monitoring, ESS, and record failed reads as unavailable, not zero.
-
Keep control where it is
Startup authorization, scheduling, zero export and power control stay with the SmartLogger and the commissioning provider. The manual has the startup authorization code issued through the device vendor or its authorized service provider; Edge sends no writes.
Common questions
- Are the SmartLogger values per cabinet?
- No. Registers such as SOC 40515 and rated ESS capacity 40484 are aggregated over all ESSs the SmartLogger manages. Rated capacity divided by 215.0 kWh gives the number of 215-2S10 cabinets behind the reading.14
- What is different about units made before 2025?
- The manual says LUNA2000-215-2S10 units made in or before December 2024 do not support on/off-grid switching or phase-level power limit control. Monitoring through the SmartLogger is the same.2
