Alpha ESS STORION-H30/H50-G3

Commercial all-in-one battery energy storage system

The STORION-H29.9/H30/H50-G3 is an outdoor all-in-one C&I energy storage cabinet that holds a 29.9, 30 or 50 kW hybrid PCS, LFP battery modules of 24.1 kWh, a DC/DC stage, an STS and an Alpha ESS EMS. Alpha ESS lists Modbus TCP as a communication interface and as a dispatching protocol, beside its cloud API. The point list is not public, so Edge reads the EMS over Modbus TCP from Alpha ESS's project point list, or measures the cabinet with an EpiSensor ZEM on its AC feeder.

Compatibility

Compatible with EpiSensor Edge over Modbus TCP through the cabinet EMS, or through an EpiSensor ZEM on its AC feeder

The datasheet lists RS485, CAN, Ethernet and Modbus TCP for communication and Modbus TCP and API for dispatching, and the installation manual places the EMS between the PCS, battery, meter and SCADA. Edge is a Modbus TCP client; the addresses, types and scales come from Alpha ESS's point list for the installed EMS. Where no point list is available, an EpiSensor ZEM measures power and energy at the cabinet's AC connection.

STORION-H29.9-G3, STORION-H30-G3 and STORION-H50-G3 under installation manual V1.6 (cover V09) and datasheet V2.3. Site check: obtain the EMS Modbus TCP point list and endpoint from Alpha ESS, read system state, AC power and state of charge, and compare them with the SCADA display. The cabinet's own grid meter, PCS and battery stay on the EMS. Read-only monitoring; dispatch, peak shaving, TOU and VPP commands stay with Alpha ESS's EMS and the site owner.

The EMS has three 10 Mbps Ethernet ports and four RS-485 ports. From the factory the EMS LAN1 towards the SCADA is 192.168.200.101, LAN2 towards the PCS 192.168.200.102 and LAN3 towards the 4G router 192.168.200.103, so the cabinet network is an internal one. Ask Alpha ESS which port and address a third-party Modbus TCP client should use, then read only the points in their list. The customer-platform output is optional; Edge remains the local system of record.

A qualified electrician fits CTs on the three phases of the cabinet feeder, separate from the CTs of the cabinet's own grid meter, and wires them to an EpiSensor ZEM. The ZEM reports over the EpiSensor wireless network without changing any Alpha ESS setting. It measures the whole cabinet at its AC terminals, including PV that the hybrid PCS exports. Interface

Documented measurements and integration boundaries for STORION-H30/H50-G3.

  • Alpha ESS's public documents give no register addresses. Take addresses, function codes, data types, scales, word order and sign from Alpha ESS's EMS point list for the installed version.
  • Request the system-level points first: operating state and alarms, AC active power at the grid connection, battery charge and discharge power, PV power, battery state of charge and charged and discharged energy, each with its sign convention.
  • The optional grid meter in the datasheet is a DTSU666 (±1%, RS485 Modbus RTU) with AKH-0.66 400/5 A CTs, wired to the EMS RS-485 bus. Read its values through the EMS point list, not by adding Edge to that RS-485 pair.
  • Battery cluster values reach the EMS over CAN from the BAMU. Read them only as the EMS publishes them; cell data stays with the battery system.
  • The EMS also reads the PV conditioner, UPS or generator meter and air conditioner over RS-485, and digital inputs such as emergency stop, smoke, fire protection and water immersion. Ask which of these the point list exposes as alarms.
  • No dispatch, peak-shaving, TOU, backup or charging-limit point is written by Edge. The EMS digital inputs for charging limits and the RRCR contacts belong to the site's control design, not to monitoring.

Assessment

STORION-H29.9, H30 and H50-G3, read-only over the EMS Modbus TCP point list or by an EpiSensor ZEM on the AC feeder, with dispatch left to the Alpha ESS EMS.

InteroperabilityLimited
Modbus TCP is documented as an interface and dispatching protocol, and the EMS interfaces are mapped in the manual. The point list and the client endpoint are not public.12
AccuracyLimited
The optional grid meter is a ±1% DTSU666 and the EMS collects PCS, battery and meter data. The public documents do not list the points the EMS serves, their resolution or their sign.12
SecurityNot yet assessed
The manual gives default internal IP addresses but no authentication, user roles or hardening for the Modbus TCP interface.
ReliabilitySupported with conditions
The datasheet lists the IEC, EN and VDE standards the system is built to, the cabinet has a fire-fighting system and HVAC, and the SCADA keeps 3 years of data on a single system. Client recovery for the Modbus interface is not described.12
RuggednessSupported with conditions
IP55, C4 corrosion protection, -30 to 50 °C with PCS derating above 45 °C, 3,000 m and HVAC cooling are published. The datasheet gives the battery module -20 to 50 °C with current derating at temperature extremes.123
ScalabilityLimited
Up to 10 cabinets run in on-grid parallel with follower cabinets on the EMS network, but how a site client reads a parallel group and how many clients the EMS accepts are not published.12
LifecycleSupported with conditions
Alpha ESS publishes versioned manuals and datasheets in its service centre and states a 5-year product and 10-year battery warranty. Record EMS firmware and point-list revision with each installation.13

Setup

  1. Record the cabinet configuration

Record the model (H29.9, H30 or H50), the number of battery modules, any extra battery cabinet, follower cabinets in parallel, and the EMS and PCS firmware shown on the SCADA.

  2. Ask Alpha ESS for the dispatching point list

Request the EMS Modbus TCP point list for the installed version: addresses, function codes, types, scales, word order and the sign of every power value. Ask which Ethernet port and IP address a third-party client should use and whether it may run beside the cloud connection.

  3. Connect on a protected network

The factory EMS addresses sit in 192.168.200.0/24 on the cabinet's internal network. Connect Edge only through the port and address Alpha ESS names, behind a firewall that admits Modbus TCP from the Gateway alone.

  4. Read state, power and SOC first

Configure the system state, grid-connection AC power and battery SOC points, and compare them with the SCADA display. Then add PV, battery power and energy counters.

  5. Fit a ZEM where the point list is missing

If no point list is available, or the site needs an independent measurement, fit an EpiSensor ZEM with its own CTs on the cabinet's AC feeder. Record the import direction and compare its energy with the SCADA over a full charge and discharge cycle.

Common questions

Where is the STORION-H30/H50-G3 register map?
It is not in the public datasheet, installation manual or product page. Ask Alpha ESS for the EMS dispatching point list for the installed version.12
Can Edge read the cabinet's grid meter directly?
Not without disturbing the EMS. The meter's RS-485 port is wired to the cabinet terminals XT4:13B and XT4:14B for the EMS. Read the meter values through the EMS point list, or fit a separate EpiSensor ZEM.1
Is the Alpha ESS cloud API an Edge connection?
No. Edge reads the cabinet over Modbus TCP or measures it with a ZEM. The API that the datasheet lists for dispatching belongs to Alpha ESS's cloud platform.2
