Does it need an Aqara hub to work with Edge?

No. Aqara's app setup uses an Aqara hub, but the monitor is a Zigbee 3.0 device, so it pairs with the Zigbee radio on an EpiSensor Gateway and Edge reads it directly.

Is the reading in ppb or mg/m³?

Over Zigbee the TVOC value is reported in ppb. The display can show either ppb or mg/m³, set by its display unit setting, which does not change the value Edge receives.

How long do the batteries last?

Aqara rates the two CR2450 coin cells for more than one year. Edge reports battery voltage and percentage so the cells can be changed before the readings stop.

Where should it be mounted?

TVOC arrives in ppb as the present value of the Analog Input cluster. Temperature and humidity use the standard measurement clusters. The air quality level, the display unit and the device's internal temperature sit in Aqara's manufacturer-specific cluster.⁵

TVOC reporting is configured with a 10-second minimum interval, a 1-hour maximum interval and a reportable change of 5 ppb.⁵

Display unit is the one writable setting: mg/m³ or ppb for TVOC, and °C or °F for temperature. It only changes what the E Ink screen shows; mg/m³ and °C are the default.⁵

The monitor supports over-the-air firmware updates over Zigbee.^4, 5

Setup

Fit the batteries
Open the battery cover and fit the two CR2450 cells. Keep the sensor holes on the case clear.¹
Open pairing in Edge
In Edge, open pairing on the Gateway's Zigbee network. The Gateway accepts new devices while pairing is open.
Hold the button
Press and hold the button on top of the monitor until the network symbol appears on the display. It shows a searching icon while it looks for the network and a connected icon once it has joined.⁴
Test the location
Put the monitor where it will live and click the button once. Aqara uses this press as its range test: check that Edge receives the update, and if it does not, move the monitor closer to the Gateway.¹
Check the readings
Confirm that Edge shows TVOC, temperature and humidity, and compare temperature and humidity with a reference instrument. Give the TVOC reading time to settle after installation before you set thresholds on it.
