SMA Sunny Central Storage UP

Commercial and utility battery energy storage system

Sunny Central Storage UP spans SCS 3450 UP to SCS 3950 UP, with up to 3,960 kW, 1,500 V DC and named Ethernet, Modbus Master and Modbus Slave functions. The datasheet does not publish the exact external slave map, firmware scope, authentication or read-only permissions. Direct Edge integration remains unverified.

Compatibility

Direct Edge integration not yet verified

SMA names Ethernet, Modbus Master and Modbus Slave, but the retained public sources do not provide the exact firmware-matched external slave map, unit model, access controls or client coexistence contract.

Interface

Documented measurements and integration boundaries for Sunny Central Storage UP.

  • Potential inverter identity, state, AC/DC power, energy, temperatures and alarms require the approved exact firmware map.
  • Battery communication, inverter control, plant controller, string monitor, site meter and protection relay remain distinct sources.
  • Modbus Master and Modbus Slave labels describe roles, but do not identify the authorised external endpoint or readable objects.
  • No grid-forming, current boost, black start, reactive-power, protection or battery command is approved by this guide.

Assessment

SCS 3450 UP, 3600 UP, 3800 UP and 3950 UP in datasheet SCS-UP-DS-en-23. Confirm exact type designation, firmware, battery, controller and medium-voltage system. No control or protection authority is transferred.

InteroperabilityLimited
The manufacturer names relevant communications, but the retained public evidence does not provide a complete firmware-matched, read-only third-party interface contract.12
AccuracyNot yet assessed
The externally readable point set, units, sign conventions, quality states and freshness rules are not established.12
SecurityNot yet assessed
Authentication, encryption, roles and read-only privilege separation for an independent client are not defined in the retained public sources.12
ReliabilityLimited
System operating limits are published, while client recovery, stale-data behaviour and concurrent-client limits remain project-specific.12
RuggednessSupported with conditions
The datasheet publishes enclosure, cooling, temperature, humidity and altitude limits; the project must apply model-specific derating.12
ScalabilityLimited
Four power and voltage variants are documented, but external client, polling and multi-inverter limits are not.12
LifecycleSupported with conditions
Current product and datasheet material exists; exact firmware, warranty, service and project configuration remain installation-specific.12

Setup

  1. Confirm the delivered system

Record every enclosure, battery rack, PCS, BMS, EMS, meter and controller identity, plus firmware, software, network and contract revisions.

  2. Map authority before data

Document which system owns charge and discharge, protection, fire and life safety, grid control, market dispatch, settlement, warranty and emergency response.

  3. Obtain the interface contract

Require the exact endpoint role, firmware-matched point map, authentication, permissions, units, sign conventions, quality states, timestamps, update rates and client limits.

  4. Prove read-only monitoring

Begin with an approved read-only allowlist. Compare identity, state, power, energy and alarms with the authoritative system and an independent connection-point meter.

Common questions

Does Modbus Slave prove a direct Edge path?
No. The external endpoint, firmware map, addresses, units, permissions and client limits must be confirmed for the commissioned system.2
Can Edge use the string-monitor connection?
Not automatically. The datasheet names that route for SMA string-monitor communication; it does not define a general third-party telemetry service.2
Can this guide enable grid-forming or black start?
No. Those optional functions require project engineering, grid approval, protection studies and an authorised plant controller.2
