ABB D11 and D13 Modbus

Power and energy meter

D11 and D13 are direct-connected DIN-rail meters with different phase and current ratings. Their Modbus variants share an integer register map with four-register energy counters and explicit invalid-value markers.

Compatibility

Compatible through Modbus RTU

The manufacturer documents local measurement reads that can be configured in an Edge Modbus client.

D11 15 40 Modbus (D111540RS485), D11 15-M 40 Modbus (D1115M40RS485) and D13 15-M 65 Modbus (D1315M65RS485). Pulse-only and M-Bus order codes are excluded.

Optional onward data
Use the RS-485 variant and its installed address and serial settings. The manufacturer table uses hexadecimal starting addresses directly. Measurement reads use FC03; the four words of an energy counter must be decoded together. The customer-platform output is optional; Edge remains the local system of record.

Specifications

D11 and D13 solve different installation sizes while sharing the same communications approach. ABB’s ordering table distinguishes the one-module, single-phase D11 at 40 A from the three-module, three-phase D13 at 65 A. Both are direct-connected arrangements in these order codes, so a CT ratio should not be added to their returned current or energy.3

Interface

Documented measurements and integration boundaries for D11 and D13 Modbus.

  • Import active energy at 0x5000, unsigned64 in 0.01 kWh.
  • Export active energy and net energy, with signedness determined by each table entry.
  • Voltage at 0x5B00 in 0.1 V and current values with their own scales.
  • Model-dependent phase measurements; unsupported values have documented invalid markers rather than meaningful zeroes.

Assessment

D11 15 40 Modbus (D111540RS485), D11 15-M 40 Modbus (D1115M40RS485) and D13 15-M 65 Modbus (D1315M65RS485). Pulse-only and M-Bus order codes are excluded.

InteroperabilityWell supported
A shared manufacturer table defines functions, addresses, widths, endianness and invalid values.1
AccuracySupported with conditions
Direct current ratings and phase count differ by order code; metrological approval remains variant-specific.3
SecurityNot yet assessed
The cited documents do not establish authenticated or encrypted measurement transport.1
ReliabilitySupported with conditions
Explicit invalid markers let a client distinguish missing measurements from electrical zero.1
RuggednessSupported with conditions
DIN-rail installation and terminal arrangements are documented; site enclosure suitability is installation-dependent.2
ScalabilitySupported with conditions
RS-485 addressed collection is documented; full counters and unsupported values must be handled per meter.1
LifecycleNot yet assessed
No support lifetime or end-of-sale commitment is stated in the cited ordering and communication documents.3

Setup

Decode imported active energy

The common map specifies 0x5000, four registers, unsigned value and 0.01 kWh resolution. The request below is derived from that table.

Acceptance: The CRC and arithmetic are independently checked against the table. Some narrative annotations beside the manual’s frame refer to another read; use the explicit 0x5000 address, four-word width and eight-byte payload shown here. Confirm the actual result against the installed meter display.

  1. Check the complete order code

Confirm the RS485 suffix, phase configuration and direct-connected current rating. Match MID approval to the exact M variant rather than the family name.

  2. Connect the documented serial terminals

Use A data minus, B data plus and C common as identified in the installation manual. Match the installed address and serial framing to the Edge client. Do not infer polarity from another manufacturer’s A/B labels.

  3. Read one complete energy counter

Read FC03 at hexadecimal 0x5000, decimal 20480, quantity 4. These are literal map addresses, not 4xxxx display references. Decode all eight bytes as unsigned64 with the most significant byte first.

  4. Reject unavailable values before scaling

For an unsigned quantity, all-ones words mean invalid. Signed quantities use their maximum positive value as the invalid marker. Keep unavailable separate from zero and from an enormous consumption total.

  5. Check an interval against the meter

Multiply the integer energy value by 0.01 kWh. Compare with the local import-energy display, then verify an interval delta under a known load. Preserve import, export and net-counter meaning rather than combining them implicitly.
