Belimo: HVAC actuators, valves and meters for thermal energy measurement

Overview

Belimo supplies field devices for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Its history covers damper actuators, control valves and sensors, while the 22PEM-1U datasheet provides a precise example of the thermal-meter offering. Thermal energy measurement answers a different question from electrical metering: it measures energy transferred through a water circuit.

The wider range includes Energy Valve products that combine measurement with control. A standalone thermal meter and a valve-based control assembly should not be treated as interchangeable. Select the hydraulic and control function first, then the model and communication interface appropriate to the automation system.

Offering

The 22PEM-1U family uses separate logic and sensor modules. Its model table covers multiple pipe sizes and flow ranges, making the final suffix important for hydraulic selection. The logic module supplies power and communication, while the sensor module records the metering data and carries the display.

The 22PEM-1UD product page names that specific model and supplies interface documents. It is useful for engineers because it distinguishes current firmware 4.2 material from archived versions. Retaining the model code and software version alongside the point list makes later commissioning and maintenance less dependent on assumptions.

The Americas operating manual uses separate 22PE-5U and 22PE-5X model names. Its regional fluid, connection and approval specifications should not be copied onto the European 22PEM family.

Technology

The datasheet names BACnet/IP, BACnet MS/TP, Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU and MP-Bus. Wired M-Bus requires the G-22PEM-A01 converter. MP-Bus and M-Bus are different interfaces despite their similar names; choosing one cannot be inferred from the other.

Battery buffering also has an important limitation: metering and stored totals continue, but ordinary bus communication does not; NFC remains available. A monitoring design must therefore distinguish continued measurement from continued network reporting during a supply interruption. Use the firmware-matched interface files to establish addresses, object definitions and scaling instead of treating protocol support as a complete configuration.

Markets

These products fit hydronic heating and cooling applications where operators need measured thermal consumption or controlled flow. The meter datasheet defines water as the medium and provides flow, pressure-drop and installation information. Hydraulic conditions affect both the physical selection and the quality of the result, independently of whether the network is Ethernet or RS485.

For a retrofit, confirm available power, pipe dimensions, sensor placement and the existing automation bus before ordering. A network connection cannot compensate for a meter installed in an unsuitable hydraulic arrangement. Billing applications additionally require the correct approved model and installation scope; a family name is not enough to establish compliance.

This profile concerns the global Belimo supplier rather than assigning the US office as the company headquarters.
