Overview

Budderfly combines energy-efficient equipment with financing, installation and continuing operation for commercial customers. Its Energy as a Service model removes the initial customer capital requirement for agreed upgrades and links the service to ongoing energy management. The company is therefore more than a monitoring software provider: it changes and manages physical equipment as part of the relationship. Lighting, HVAC, refrigeration and other systems form part of the portfolio. The customer portal provides visibility of consumption, costs and equipment performance, while Budderfly’s team continues to monitor sites and manage the contracted service.

Offering

The service portfolio includes equipment upgrades, monitoring and the Near Zero programme for deeper energy improvements. The ReLED programme appears in lighting retrofit case studies, including a Dunkin’ deployment. These are distinct interventions within the wider managed service rather than interchangeable software modules. Billing and measurement tools consolidate energy information and expose metrics for consumption, savings and carbon reductions through the customer portal. The commercial agreement determines the equipment and service scope for a site. No-upfront-capital describes how the investment is funded; it does not mean there is no continuing contractual or financial commitment.

Technology

Budderfly’s virtual power plant coordinates flexible demand across enrolled commercial sites. The June 2025 activation announcement names CAISO, ISO New England, PJM and SPP territories, with initial deployments using thermostatic HVAC control. It identifies Evergy and Leap among the collaborating organisations. Refrigeration, batteries, lighting and solar were described as expansion areas in that announcement, so the initial scope should not be broadened retrospectively. The operating model differs from a software-only aggregator: Budderfly says it owns and operates the behind-the-meter resources it enrols. Portfolio orchestration depends on those physical assets, customer operating requirements and the applicable grid programme.

Markets

Budderfly’s case-study library includes restaurants, fitness facilities, education and other commercial sites. Examples name McDonald’s and Wendy’s operators, YMCA and Union University, alongside more recent franchise portfolios. Those case studies establish specific customer deployments rather than a claim that every location of a franchise brand uses the service. The VPP offer extends the same commercial footprint into grid flexibility by coordinating energy-consuming equipment behind the meter. Its suitability is closely tied to repeatable building systems and an operator willing to use a managed equipment model, rather than simply purchasing analytics for independently managed assets.

Company

Budderfly’s official company profile lists Shelton, Connecticut as headquarters and 2007 as its founding year. The company’s coverage of its later business model dates the Energy as a Service venture to 2017, a separate milestone from the older corporate history. Al Subbloie is founder and CEO. A 2022 board announcement records Partners Group’s majority investment and growth-capital commitment, while naming the expansion of installation capacity, software and services as priorities. The business combines capital investment with equipment operation and customer support, which explains why financing and delivery capacity are central to its model alongside energy technology.
