Fronius: Solar inverters, site meters and documented local data interfaces

Fronius supplies solar inverters, energy meters and monitoring equipment, with local SunSpec Modbus interfaces documented for specific product generations.

Summary

Best for

Less suited to
Assuming every meter uses the inverter's network interface or that different SunSpec model formats share addresses.
Deployment
Inverter with appropriate site meter and supported monitoring hardware or built-in communications.
Data in
Inverter readings and connected-meter information through generation-specific SunSpec and other documented interfaces.

Overview

Fronius makes solar inverters and the metering and communication equipment used around them. The company history also covers its welding and charging businesses, so the solar portfolio is one part of a wider technology manufacturer. For energy monitoring, the important distinction is between an inverter's own production readings and a separate meter measuring flows at the building connection.

The Smart Meter TS 65A-3 provides that physical measurement. GEN24 communications and Datamanager 2.0 provide documented routes for accessing inverter and connected-meter information. These layers can be combined, but their wiring, configuration and data representations should be understood separately when planning a collection system.

Offering

The Smart Meter TS 65A-3 manual describes a three-phase direct-connected instrument with a maximum current of 65 A. This is a different selection from a meter requiring external current transformers. The manual also covers its position in the installation and its serial connection to compatible Fronius equipment.

For inverter data, GEN24 has its own communications documentation. Datamanager 2.0 is a separately documented monitoring generation with its own configuration interface. Comparing these by product generation helps identify which setup screens, connected-meter behaviour and data models apply, instead of assuming that a guide for one Fronius communications product describes every installation.

Technology

The GEN24 Modbus manual distinguishes floating-point SunSpec meter models from integer values with scale factors. It explicitly notes that the register positions differ between representations. It also describes how a meter connected through Modbus RTU can be read through the inverter's Modbus TCP interface using the corresponding meter model.

Meter location affects interpretation. The same manual distinguishes grid connection, load, external generator and sub-load positions, with different meanings for power signs and energy counters. A useful integration therefore records the location and selected model format as well as the value. The Datamanager instructions provide the corresponding configuration guidance for that product generation.

Integrations and interoperability

  1. Supported BYD PV batteries

The official storage page names selected BYD systems as compatible; exact inverter/battery pairing must follow its compatibility list.10

  2. Supported LG PV batteries

The official storage page names selected LG systems as compatible; this is not blanket compatibility with every LG battery.10

Markets

A site monitoring project can use inverter data to understand generation and a separate Smart Meter to distinguish grid exchange from building demand. This is particularly useful when evaluating self-consumption or the effect of controllable loads. The metering position determines what the reading represents, so a production counter and a grid-import counter answer different operational questions.

The GEN24 documentation includes both measurement models and separately configured control functions. Those should be evaluated as different tasks: collecting a reading needs a correct decoder and interpretation, while changing inverter behaviour requires the appropriate configuration and system design. This profile describes the documented interfaces without presenting a universal external-control entitlement.

Company

Fronius dates its founding to 1945, when Günter Fronius established the business in Pettenbach. Its current history describes continuing family ownership, and the international locations page identifies Fronius International GmbH's headquarters in Pettenbach, Austria. The same page lists national subsidiaries separately, which avoids confusing a regional office with the group's headquarters.

The documentation is unusually useful for evaluating local data access because Fronius publishes complete browser-readable manuals for GEN24 Modbus, Datamanager and the TS 65A-3 meter. Those sources expose model choices and installation roles directly, providing a stronger starting point for an implementation than a broad statement that an inverter supports Modbus.
