Rayleigh Instruments RI-F400 and RI-F300
Power and energy meter
The RI-F400 and RI-F300 are DIN 96 panel meters from Rayleigh Instruments in the easywire family, which takes its current inputs from Rayleigh's easywire CTs over RJ45 leads. Both are powered from the measured voltage and come in a pulse-only version and a -G-C version with RS485 Modbus RTU; the RI-F300 is MID B+D certified and also comes with M-Bus. Rayleigh's Modbus register documents print each measurement as a decimal number from 30000 beside its zero-based hex address, and every measurement as a 32-bit float with the low-order word in the first register. The RI-F300 map adds a block of integer values and energy rollover counters.
Compatibility
Compatible with EpiSensor Edge over Modbus RTU
The RI-F400-G-C and RI-F300-G-C are compatible with EpiSensor Edge over Modbus RTU on their RS485 terminals, read through a ZMB-31 Modbus Interface or a Gateway serial port. Rayleigh publishes the register list for each model with decimal and hex addresses, data structure, length and unit.
RI-F400-G-C and RI-F300-G-C, read with Rayleigh's register documents RI-F400-C-COMM V01 and RI-F300-C-COMM V01. Site check: read Voltage V1-N from wire address 0x0000 as a float with the words reversed and compare it with the display. Read-only monitoring: no writes to the password, settings, resets or factory default registers.

Models
| Models | Interface | Route into Edge |
|---|---|---|
| RI-F400-G-C | DIN 96 panel meter, 330 mV easywire CT inputs over RJ45 (or 1 A and 5 A CTs through the TAS-SCTEWA module), one kWh pulse output and RS485 Modbus RTU | Read the float registers in RI-F400-C-COMM V01 over RS485 through a ZMB-31 or a Gateway serial port. |
| RI-F300-G-C | MID certified DIN 96 panel meter, 1 A easywire CT inputs, one pulse output and RS485 Modbus RTU | Same float registers and route, read with RI-F300-C-COMM V01. Use the float energy registers: the integer energy values in the 31000 block take three registers each. |
| RI-F400-G-P, RI-F300-G-P and RI-F300-G-MB | Pulse output only, or the RI-F300 with wired M-Bus to EN 13757 instead of Modbus | No Modbus port, so this guide does not cover them. Rayleigh publishes no M-Bus record list for the RI-F300-G-MB; for either version, an EpiSensor electricity monitor on the same circuit gives Edge the measurement. |
Specifications
Both meters show voltage, current, power factor, THD, frequency, power, demand, run hours and import and export energy on a white backlit LCD, and take their supply from the measured voltage. They connect single phase (selectable phase on the RI-F400, L1 on the RI-F300) or three phase four wire, and a Voltage OUT connector daisy-chains the supply to up to 32 meters.24

Interface
Documented measurements and integration boundaries for RI-F400 and RI-F300.
- Rayleigh prints a decimal address from 30000 beside a hex start register for every row: Voltage V1-N is 30000 at 0x00 and Total net kWh is 30058 at 0x3A. The hex value is the zero-based address on the wire, and the decimal number is that address plus 30000 (one row prints 0x4B for 30076, where the decimal sequence gives 0x4C). The settings rows start again at 40000 with hex 0x00.
- The header lists functions 3 and 4, and the Function column marks the measurement rows 3 and the settings rows 4. The settings rows are read and written, so the column reads as the 3X input and 4X holding tables rather than a function code. Read the measurements with FC04 first; if the meter answers with an illegal function exception, read the same address with FC03.
- FLOAT REVERSE WORD is a 32-bit IEEE float in two registers with the low-order word first: Rayleigh's example places the least significant half of Total net kWh in register 30058 and the most significant half in 30059. In Edge, choose a float with the words swapped.
- Voltages V1-N, V2-N and V3-N at 30000, 30002 and 30004 (hex 0000, 0002, 0004) and their average at 30006; V1-2, V2-3 and V3-1 at 30008, 30010 and 30012 and their average at 30014; all in V.
- Currents I1, I2 and I3 at 30016, 30018 and 30020 (hex 0010, 0012, 0014), average current at 30022 and calculated neutral current at 30122 (hex 007A), in A.
- Power in kW, kVA and kVAr: kW1 to kW3 at 30024 to 30028, kVA1 to kVA3 at 30030 to 30034, kVAr1 to kVAr3 at 30036 to 30040; Total kW at 30042 (hex 002A), Total kVA at 30044 and Total kVAr at 30046. Power factor PF1 to PF3 at 30048 to 30052, average PF at 30054 and frequency at 30056 (hex 0038) in Hz.
- Energy in kWh, kVArh and kVAh: Total net kWh at 30058 (hex 003A), Total net kVAh at 30060 and Total net kVArh at 30062; Total kWh (Imp) at 30096 (hex 0060) and Total kWh (Exp) at 30098 (hex 0062); Total kVArh (Imp) at 30112 and (Exp) at 30114; per-phase import and export from 30084 and per-phase kVAh at 30116 to 30120. Run hour at 30082 in hours.
- Demand and THD: maximum and minimum kW, kVAr and kVA from 30064, maximum current demand per phase from 30074; THD of each voltage and current from 30124 to 30140, in %. Serial number at 30684 (hex 02AC), two registers in hex; phase sequence at 30700 (hex 02BC), 0 clockwise, 1 anticlockwise, 2 invalid.
- RI-F300 only: a second block from 31000 (hex 03E8) repeats the readings as integers in mV, mA, W and VA, with energy in Wh, VArh and VAh in three registers per value, and rollover counters at 31200 to 31221 that count each roll of an energy register from 99999999 to 0. The map gives no word order for the three-register values, which Edge cannot read as one number, so use the float block for energy.
- Settings start at 40000: password at 40000 (default 1000), network selection at 40001, CT primary at 40003, slave ID at 40007, baud rate at 40008, parity at 40009 and stop bit at 40010. The RI-F400 map also has factory default (40012), energy resets (40013 to 40015, 40044), demand resets and page settings. Keep all of them out of a monitoring poll.
Assessment
RI-F400-G-C and RI-F300-G-C, read with Rayleigh's register documents RI-F400-C-COMM V01 and RI-F300-C-COMM V01. Site check: read Voltage V1-N from wire address 0x0000 as a float with the words reversed and compare it with the display. Read-only monitoring: no writes to the password, settings, resets or factory default registers.
- InteroperabilitySupported with conditions
- Rayleigh publishes a register list per model with decimal and hex addresses, length, data structure, unit and an example of the reverse-word float. The list does not name the function code per table unambiguously, and one hex address is misprinted, so the first read needs a short function code check.13
- AccuracySupported with conditions
- Class 1 active energy with separate import, export and net counters per phase and in total, plus class 2 reactive energy; the RI-F300 adds MID class B. Voltage and current are 0.5% of full scale, and the easywire current input needs Rayleigh's easywire CTs or the TAS-SCTEWA converter.124
- SecurityLimited
- Programming needs a password, but the factory password is 1000 and the map places it in holding register 40000 with read and write access, beside writable resets and a factory default command. The RI-F300 locks its MID settings after 15 minutes. Modbus RTU has no encryption, so keep the bus private and the client read-only.14
- ReliabilitySupported with conditions
- EMC tested to IEC/EN 61326-1 and the IEC/EN 61000-4 series, with non-volatile memory retention. The meters take their supply from the measured voltage: the RI-F400 from L1 and neutral, so it stops reporting when L1 is lost, and the RI-F300 from any phase.24
- RuggednessSupported with conditions
- Rated -10 to +55 °C, 0 to 85% RH non-condensing, IP54 front and IP20 terminals, installation category III. Indoor panel instruments that need a switchboard door or enclosure.24
- ScalabilitySupported with conditions
- 32 meters per bus, 255 with a repeater, within 500 m, at up to 19200 baud. Larger sites need several buses or repeaters, and the supply daisy chain is limited to 32 meters.2
Setup
Read Voltage V1-N at 30000, then Total net kWh at 30058
Rayleigh's RI-F400-C-COMM V01 and RI-F300-C-COMM V01 list Voltage V1-N at decimal 30000, hex 0x00, and Total net kWh at decimal 30058, hex 0x3A, both as FLOAT REVERSE WORD, two registers, with a factory slave ID of 1. The hex column is the address sent on the wire.
- Request
- 01 04 00 00 00 02 71 CB: slave ID 1, FC04, address 0x0000 (decimal 30000, Voltage V1-N), two registers, RTU CRC.
- Address convention
- The decimal column is 30000 plus the hex start register: 30000 is 0x0000, 30058 is 0x003A and 30096 is 0x0060. The header's address offset of +1 suits a client that numbers registers from one, which enters the hex address plus one; Edge takes the hex value.
- Synthetic response
- 01 04 04 00 00 43 66 4A 9E: registers 0x0000 then 0x4366. With the words reversed the float is 0x43660000 = 230.0 V.
- Function 03 fallback
- If the meter rejects FC04 with an illegal function exception, send 01 03 00 00 00 02 C4 0B. Synthetic response 01 03 04 00 00 43 66 4B 29 decodes to the same 230.0 V.
- Energy read
- 01 04 00 3A 00 02 51 C6 reads two registers from 0x003A. Synthetic response 01 04 04 E6 66 46 40 1F 43: registers 0xE666 then 0x4640, so the float is 0x4640E666 = 12345.6 kWh.
- Acceptance
- Keep the points when V1-N agrees with the display and Total net kWh agrees with the energy screen at the same time. A float decoded without the word swap gives a value that does not match the display.
Acceptance: The response bytes are a synthetic decoder check, not a captured meter reply. Record which function code the installed meter answered, and use it for every measurement point.
-
Identify the model
Check that the label reads RI-F400-G-C or RI-F300-G-C. The -G-P versions have only the pulse output and the RI-F300-G-MB has M-Bus instead of Modbus.
-
Read the communication settings
Enter the meter's programming menu with its password (1000 from the factory, according to the register map) and step through the slave ID, baud rate, parity and stop bit settings. Enter the same values in the Edge serial client or the ZMB-31. On the RI-F300, the settings the datasheet marks in red lock 15 minutes after programming mode is entered.
-
Wire the RS485 pair
Connect the RS485 + and - terminals in a daisy chain with no stubs and keep the bus within 500 m of the master.
-
Find the function code
Read two registers from wire address 0x0000 with FC04. If the meter answers with an illegal function exception, repeat the read with FC03 and use that function for every measurement.
-
Check the word order
Decode Voltage V1-N with the second register as the high word and compare it with the V1-N display. If it does not match, the read is on the wrong address or the words are not swapped.
-
Add energy and power
Add Total kWh (Imp) at wire address 0x0060 and Total kWh (Exp) at 0x0062, then power and power factor, and compare the energy with the kWh display. Never write to the password, reset or factory default registers.
Common questions
- Which address do I send for RI-F400 register 30000?
- Send 0x0000. Rayleigh prints a hex start register beside every decimal address, and the decimal number is 30000 plus that hex value: Total net kWh is 30058 at 0x3A and Total kWh (Imp) is 30096 at 0x60. A client that numbers registers from one enters the hex value plus one.13
- What word order do the RI-F400 floats use?
- The low-order word comes first. Rayleigh calls it FLOAT REVERSE WORD and shows Total net kWh with its least significant half in register 30058 and its most significant half in 30059. Set the Edge float point to swap words, then check one value against the display.1
- Does the RI-F400 use function 03 or function 04?
- Rayleigh's header lists functions 3 and 4, and its Function column marks the measurements 3 and the settings 4. Because the settings are read and written, the column reads as the register table rather than a function code. Start with FC04 for the measurements and fall back to FC03 on an illegal function exception.13
- Can I read import and export energy separately?
- Yes. Total kWh (Imp) is at 30096 and Total kWh (Exp) at 30098, with Total net kWh at 30058, the per-phase import and export counters from 30084 and reactive import and export at 30112 and 30114. All are reverse-word floats in kWh or kVArh.13
- Is the RI-F300 suitable for billing, and can its energy be reset over Modbus?
- The RI-F300 is MID B+D certified to IEC/EN 50470 for billing applications, and its datasheet says the programming values lock 15 minutes after programming mode is entered. Its Modbus map has no energy reset register, unlike the RI-F400 map, which has reset registers at 40013 to 40015 and 40044.134
- How many RI-F400 meters can share one RS485 bus?
- Rayleigh's datasheet gives 32 meters on one bus, up to 255 with an RS485 repeater, and 500 m from the master. Each meter needs its own slave ID from 1 to 255.2
