Rayleigh Instruments RI-D440
Power and energy meter
The RI-D440 is a four-module DIN rail meter in Rayleigh Instruments' easywire family: its current inputs come from Rayleigh's easywire CTs over RJ45 leads, and it takes its supply from V1. The RI-D440-G-C has one pulse output and an RS485 Modbus RTU port; instruction manual V02 also names an M-Bus version, RI-D440-G-MB. Rayleigh's register document RI-D440-C-COMM V01 lists 36 measurement rows from decimal 30000 beside their zero-based hex addresses, all but one as 32-bit floats with the low-order word in the first register. The map carries total net active and reactive energy, not separate import and export counters.
Compatibility
Compatible with EpiSensor Edge over Modbus RTU
The RI-D440-G-C is compatible with EpiSensor Edge over Modbus RTU on its RS485 terminals, read through a ZMB-31 Modbus Interface or a Gateway serial port. Rayleigh publishes the register list with decimal and hex addresses, data structure, length and unit.
RI-D440-G-C, read with Rayleigh's register document RI-D440-C-COMM V01. Site check: read Voltage V1-N from wire address 0x0000 as a float with the words reversed and compare it with the display. Read-only monitoring: no writes to the password, settings, resets or factory default registers.

Interface
Documented measurements and integration boundaries for RI-D440.
- Rayleigh prints a decimal address from 30000 beside a hex start register for every row: Voltage V1-N is 30000 at 0x00 and Total net kWh is 30058 at 0x3A. The hex value is the zero-based address on the wire, and the decimal number is that address plus 30000. The settings rows start again at 40000 with hex 0x00.
- The header lists functions 3 and 4, and the Function column marks the measurement rows 3 and the settings rows 4. The settings rows are read and written, so the column reads as the 3X input and 4X holding tables rather than a function code. Read the measurements with FC04 first; if the meter answers with an illegal function exception, read the same address with FC03.
- FLOAT REVERSE WORD is a 32-bit IEEE float in two registers with the low-order word first: Rayleigh's example places the least significant half of Total net kWh in register 30058 and the most significant half in 30059. In Edge, choose a float with the words swapped.
- Voltages V1-N, V2-N and V3-N at 30000, 30002 and 30004 (hex 0000, 0002, 0004) and their average at 30006; V1-2, V2-3 and V3-1 at 30008, 30010 and 30012 and their average at 30014; all in V.
- Currents I1, I2 and I3 at 30016, 30018 and 30020 (hex 0010, 0012, 0014) and average current at 30022 (hex 0016), in A.
- Power: kW1 to kW3 at 30024 to 30028, kVA1 to kVA3 at 30030 to 30034 and kVAr1 to kVAr3 at 30036 to 30040; Total kW at 30042 (hex 002A), Total kVA at 30044 and Total kVAr at 30046, in kW, kVA and kVAr. Power factor PF1 to PF3 at 30048 to 30052 and average PF at 30054; frequency at 30056 (hex 0038) in Hz.
- Energy: Total net kWh at 30058 (hex 003A) and Total net kVArh at 30062 (hex 003E). The map has no separate import or export counters and no apparent energy register, so a circuit that exports needs another meter for export energy.
- 30064 (kW Active Power) and 30072 (kVA Apparent Power) are separate rows from Total kW and Total kVA, and 30134 and 30138 carry the existing maximum kW and kVA. The map does not say whether 30064 and 30072 are present or demand values, so compare them with the Max MD display pages before relying on them. Serial number at 30132 (hex 0084), two registers in hex.
- Settings start at 40000: password at 40000 (default 1000), network selection at 40001, CT primary at 40003, PT secondary and primary at 40004 and 40005, slave ID at 40007, baud rate at 40008 (5 is 9600), parity at 40009 and stop bit at 40010. Factory default (40012), Reset kWh (40013), Reset kVArh (40015) and the maximum demand resets (40037, 40041) are writes; keep all of them out of a monitoring poll.
Assessment
RI-D440-G-C, read with Rayleigh's register document RI-D440-C-COMM V01. Site check: read Voltage V1-N from wire address 0x0000 as a float with the words reversed and compare it with the display. Read-only monitoring: no writes to the password, settings, resets or factory default registers.
- InteroperabilitySupported with conditions
- Rayleigh publishes a register list with decimal and hex addresses, length, data structure, unit and an example of the reverse-word float. The list does not name the function code per table unambiguously, so the first read needs a short function code check.1
- AccuracyLimited
- Class 1 active and class 2 reactive energy with per-phase voltage, current, power and power factor. Over Modbus the meter gives only net active and reactive energy, with no import, export or apparent energy, and the easywire current input needs Rayleigh's easywire CTs or the TAS-SCTEWA converter.123
- SecurityLimited
- Programming needs a password, but the factory password is 1000 and the map places it in holding register 40000 with read and write access, beside writable energy resets and a factory default command. Modbus RTU has no encryption, so keep the bus private and the client read-only.12
- ReliabilitySupported with conditions
- EMC tested to IEC/EN 61326-1 and the IEC/EN 61000-4 series, with non-volatile memory retention. The meter takes its supply from V1 only, so it stops reporting when V1 is lost, along with any meter chained from its Voltage OUT connector.23
- RuggednessSupported with conditions
- Rated -10 to +55 °C, 0 to 85% RH non-condensing, IP54 front and IP20 terminals, installation category III. Rayleigh requires a suitable IP-rated enclosure and indoor use.23
Setup
Read Voltage V1-N at 30000, then Total net kWh at 30058
Rayleigh's RI-D440-C-COMM V01 lists Voltage V1-N at decimal 30000, hex 0x00, and Total net kWh at decimal 30058, hex 0x3A, both as FLOAT REVERSE WORD, two registers, with a factory slave ID of 1. The hex column is the address sent on the wire.
- Request
- 01 04 00 00 00 02 71 CB: slave ID 1, FC04, address 0x0000 (decimal 30000, Voltage V1-N), two registers, RTU CRC.
- Address convention
- The decimal column is 30000 plus the hex start register: 30000 is 0x0000, 30058 is 0x003A and 30132 is 0x0084. The header's address offset of +1 suits a client that numbers registers from one, which enters the hex address plus one; Edge takes the hex value.
- Synthetic response
- 01 04 04 33 33 43 73 74 1A: registers 0x3333 then 0x4373. With the words reversed the float is 0x43733333 = 243.2 V.
- Function 03 fallback
- If the meter rejects FC04 with an illegal function exception, send 01 03 00 00 00 02 C4 0B. Synthetic response 01 03 04 33 33 43 73 75 AD decodes to the same 243.2 V.
- Energy read
- 01 04 00 3A 00 02 51 C6 reads two registers from 0x003A. Synthetic response 01 04 04 BE 66 45 8E 8D 47: registers 0xBE66 then 0x458E, so the float is 0x458EBE66 = 4567.8 kWh.
- Acceptance
- Keep the points when V1-N agrees with the phase voltage page and Total net kWh agrees with the energy page at the same time. A float decoded without the word swap gives a value that does not match the display.
Acceptance: The response bytes are a synthetic decoder check, not a captured meter reply. Record which function code the installed meter answered, and use it for every measurement point.
-
Identify the model
Check that the label reads RI-D440-G-C. The RI-D440-G-MB has M-Bus instead of Modbus.
-
Read the communication settings
Hold the configuration button for 3 seconds and enter the password (1000 from the factory), then step to settings 7 to 10: slave ID, baud rate, parity and stop bit. Enter the same values in the Edge serial client or the ZMB-31.
-
Wire the RS485 pair
Connect A (+) and B (-) in a daisy chain of at most 32 meters and 500 m, with no star connections.
-
Find the function code
Read two registers from wire address 0x0000 with FC04. If the meter answers with an illegal function exception, repeat the read with FC03 and use that function for every measurement.
-
Check the word order
Decode Voltage V1-N with the second register as the high word and compare it with the Avg Voltage and phase voltage pages. If it does not match, the read is on the wrong address or the words are not swapped.
-
Add energy and power
Add Total net kWh at wire address 0x003A, then total and phase power and power factor, and compare the energy with the kWh display. Never write to the password, reset or factory default registers.
Common questions
- Which address do I send for RI-D440 register 30058?
- Send 0x003A. Rayleigh prints a hex start register beside every decimal address, and the decimal number is 30000 plus that hex value: Voltage V1-N is 30000 at 0x00 and Total net kWh is 30058 at 0x3A. A client that numbers registers from one enters the hex value plus one.1
- What word order do the RI-D440 floats use?
- The low-order word comes first. Rayleigh calls it FLOAT REVERSE WORD and shows Total net kWh with its least significant half in register 30058 and its most significant half in 30059. Set the Edge float point to swap words, then check one value against the display.1
- Does the RI-D440 report import and export energy separately?
- Not over Modbus. RI-D440-C-COMM V01 has Total net kWh at 30058 and Total net kVArh at 30062 and no import, export or apparent energy registers. Where export matters, choose a meter whose map has separate import and export counters.1
- Does the RI-D440 use function 03 or function 04?
- Rayleigh's header lists functions 3 and 4, and its Function column marks the measurements 3 and the settings 4. Because the settings are read and written, the column reads as the register table rather than a function code. Start with FC04 for the measurements and fall back to FC03 on an illegal function exception.1
- Can the RI-D440 run a star network?
- Not for Modbus. Rayleigh's instruction manual marks daisy chain as the only Modbus topology and star as M-Bus only, with at most 32 meters within 500 m.2
