A distribution centre with a 1,000 A incomer wants to shed a non-critical load when grid frequency falls, for a static frequency response programme.

How the plan was chosen

The programme needs static frequency response: the controller drops a non-critical load through its own 4 A relay when frequency falls, and restores it afterwards. That is the ZDR-20. A programme that asks for event evidence needs the ZDR-21, and a battery or UPS that follows frequency needs the ZDR-22.

The incomer carries up to 1,000 A per phase on conductors too large for a split-core CT, so the controller comes with 1,000 A flexible Rogowski coils, fitted and calibrated to it.

The controller reports to a ZGW-20 Gateway running Edge, which records each event and passes the data to the programme's platform.

Control of a live load is always confirmed with our engineers before ordering: the control authority, interlocks, fail-safe behaviour and manual override have to be agreed for the site.

Selection notes and confirmations

ZDR-20-r1k · Demand Response Controller

For 1 controlled load: Loads for demand response

Sheds a non-critical load through its own 4 A relay when frequency falls, and meters the incomer on 1,000 A flexible Rogowski coils.

  • Static frequency response through the controller’s own relay, rated 4 A at 250 V AC: shed a non-critical load, or start a standby generator. No high-resolution recording.
  • The flexible Rogowski coils wrap a conductor of any size, a busbar, or several cables in one phase, and connect directly with no separate integrator.
  • The current transformers arrive fitted and calibrated against that controller, so its Class 0.5S metering covers the whole measurement.
  • Up to 30 data feeds, streamed every second, and an optional RS-485 Modbus master for up to four devices.
  • Ordering needs approved control authority, interlocks, fail-safe behaviour, manual override and a qualified electrical installation.

ZGW-20-UZ-NC-NW-EU-DT-C4-NS-NP-NIO-NR-W1-NSIM · Gateway

Every EpiSensor device reports over the Zigbee mesh to a Gateway, which runs Edge on site. One Gateway carries up to 250 devices.

  • Edge comes pre-installed and licensed for unlimited EpiSensor devices.

SUP-GW-Y · Support (optional)

Direct access to EpiSensor engineers for commissioning questions, faults and firmware, for each Gateway.

CORE-GW-SUB-Y · Core (optional)

Core manages every Gateway from one place: health, updates, backups and remote access.
