Energy metering and distribution-board monitoring
WAGO supplies connection and automation equipment, including standalone energy meters, measurement I/O and communication modules.
WAGO's energy-measurement offering includes both standalone energy meters and measurement modules for its I/O system. These serve different installation patterns. A standalone meter has its own measurement and communication arrangement, while an I/O module belongs within a compatible automation station and relies on that system for the external data path.
The 879-3020 is a direct-connected meter, whereas the 750-494 measures a CT secondary input. The separate 879-9000 communication module adds an Ethernet integration path for supported meters. Comparing these layers separately helps avoid buying a measurement module when the actual requirement is a complete meter with a network interface.
The 879-3020 product page specifies a direct-connected 65 A meter for three-phase 230/400 V systems, with Modbus, M-Bus and two S0 interfaces. It is identified as an MID energy meter. That identification belongs to this product and does not extend automatically to WAGO's automation I/O modules.
The 750-494 is a three-phase 480 V AC measurement module with a 1 A current input. The 750-494/000-001 changes that current input to 5 A. The suffix therefore affects the CT selection and cannot be omitted from a procurement specification. Both products belong to the modular I/O range rather than the standalone meter range.

WAGO's 879-9000 description distinguishes two operating arrangements. When directly connected to a supported energy meter, the module receives power from the meter. When used as a remote Modbus RTU-to-TCP gateway, it needs an external supply and can connect up to 32 RTU devices through RS485.
This is a concrete route for bringing readings onto Ethernet without assuming that the base meter already has an Ethernet port. The meter overview also describes M-Bus, S0 pulse outputs and Bluetooth configuration. The I/O measurement modules follow a separate path through their automation station, so their external protocol should be specified with the selected controller or coupler.
Application Grid Gateway connects field measurements to control systems and supports an encrypted A. Eberle WinPQ database path. Its documented IEC 60870-5-104 server and IEC 60870-5-101 client roles are more specific than a generic telecontrol badge. Manufacturer documentation.

A building or industrial installation can use a standalone meter where a complete instrument with local indication and communication is appropriate. A machine already using WAGO I/O may instead benefit from a measurement terminal that fits into its existing automation architecture. These options differ in system structure even when both produce power and energy information.
The Modbus TCP module is useful when the required data destination is an Ethernet-based system. Its separate remote-gateway power requirement matters during retrofit planning. Selection should also preserve the distinction between a directly connected 65 A circuit and a CT secondary input rated at 1 A or 5 A.
WAGO's Minden headquarters page identifies the group's global headquarters in Minden, Germany, and states that the company was founded in 1951. It describes production, development and administrative activities at the site, as well as an accredited test laboratory. This provides a group-level identity rather than the address of a regional sales company.
The technical scope here is the energy-measurement part of the portfolio. The standalone-meter overview, exact I/O variant page and communication-module explanation provide complementary evidence. Together they distinguish the measurement hardware from the network interface, which is more useful for system design than a single undifferentiated claim that the supplier supports Modbus.
