Dragino: Wireless sensors, serial converters and LoRaWAN gateways

Dragino supplies wireless sensor nodes, RS-485 converters and gateways, with public model-specific documentation for LoRaWAN and cellular deployments.

Summary

Best for
Adding documented remote sensing or a bounded serial-data path where a suitable wireless network is available.
Less suited to
Using a LoRaWAN serial converter as an unrestricted, low-latency replacement for every Modbus transaction.
Deployment
End devices connect through the selected radio network and gateway or cellular path to a receiving application.
Data in
Device-specific LoRaWAN payloads, serial measurements and model-dependent network interfaces.
Pricing
Sensor, gateway, network and application costs depend on the system configuration.

Overview

Dragino sells several different layers of a wireless sensing system. The LHT65N is an end device measuring temperature and humidity, while the LPS8N is a gateway that connects radio traffic to an IP network. These are complementary roles, not substitutes for each other.

For an energy-monitoring project, a temperature sensor can add environmental context while a converter may bring readings from an existing instrument. Neither role automatically creates an energy dashboard or establishes measurement accuracy for the original instrument. The system still needs the appropriate network, payload interpretation and application. Keeping those responsibilities separate makes it easier to specify hardware and diagnose missing readings.

Offering

The LHT65N product documentation identifies a LoRaWAN Class A temperature and humidity sensor with an external-sensor connection and a non-rechargeable battery. Its published battery-life estimate depends on the reporting schedule, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed replacement interval for every deployment.

The RS485-LN documentation describes a serial-to-LoRaWAN converter that can be configured to read attached RS-485 devices. This creates a different integration problem from a self-contained environmental sensor: the serial command, response interpretation and radio payload must all be defined. The converter does not remove the need for the attached meter's own register map and communications settings.

Technology

Dragino's LHT65N/S manual documents commissioning, payloads and device settings. Its documentation centre separates sensor nodes, gateways, cellular devices and server integrations, helping an integrator follow the right setup path instead of applying one generic procedure to the whole brand.

For LoRaWAN, the frequency region, activation credentials, network-server configuration and application decoder must agree. For a serial converter, the RS485-LN manual adds polling and response handling to that chain. A successful join proves only the radio-network stage. The useful end-to-end check is a correctly decoded reading from the intended sensor or register, with the expected unit and timestamp.

Markets

The LHT65N product page places its sensing hardware in building, industrial and other remote-monitoring applications. In buildings, temperature and humidity readings can help explain operating conditions around energy use; in distributed installations, avoiding a new data cable can make additional measurement points practical. The link still needs to be planned for the actual location.

The LPS8N gateway guide describes the bridge from LoRa radio to IP connectivity. This highlights an important design boundary: the radio link, gateway backhaul and application are separate dependencies. A robust deployment checks all three, rather than assuming that a long-range sensor alone provides continuous end-to-end service.

Company

Dragino's official company page dates the business to 2010 and locates it in Shenzhen, China. It describes an engineering-led supplier with an emphasis on open hardware and software development. The year here follows that primary company account; it should not be confused with the release date of a particular gateway or sensor.

For integrators, the practical value is the public documentation centre, where model-specific instructions and integration guides can be examined before committing to hardware. Documentation availability is distinct from a tested integration: a receiving platform still needs a matching decoder, supported communications path and verification against the installed model. This profile therefore links the concrete device guides rather than implying universal compatibility from the company name.
