Residential and commercial battery storage systems
Nuvation Energy supplies battery management systems, stack switchgear and integration engineering for stationary battery energy storage systems.
Nuvation Energy supplies the battery-management layer inside energy storage systems. Its offering combines battery monitoring and protection hardware with engineering services for system developers. The BMS measures cell and stack conditions, coordinates permitted operation and exposes information to the equipment controlling the wider installation. It is a different component from the power-conversion system that moves electricity between a battery and an AC network. That distinction matters for integrators assembling batteries, inverters and an energy-management controller from different suppliers: each component has a separate operating role, interface and responsibility in the completed storage system.
The G5 product documentation separates Stack Switchgear from Cell Interface modules. The switchgear provides the stack-level electrical interface and management functions; cell modules collect measurements within the battery. One documented configuration is the NUVG5-SSG-1500-200-1, a 1500 V, 200 A model with a 200 A fuse. Those ratings describe that exact configuration, not every G5 product. Nuvation also publishes Multi-Stack Controller documentation for installations with multiple battery stacks. Its portfolio is therefore modular: a system design combines suitable cell interfaces, stack equipment and higher-level coordination rather than treating a single BMS board as a complete storage plant.

The G5 technical library provides product manuals, interface material and software-version-specific guidance. Its SunSpec Modbus TCP interface exposes a discoverable model chain, including battery models, instead of requiring every installation to use an assumed fixed register table. The documented G5 server supports a single Modbus TCP connection, an important boundary when an EMS or PCS already owns that connection. The CI-36 announcement describes thirty-six cell-voltage channels and twenty-one thermistor inputs. CI-24 and CI-36 remain distinct modules with their own documentation; a CI-24 firmware or wiring instruction cannot simply be applied to CI-36.
Nuvation works with battery manufacturers and storage-system integrators, combining its BMS products with engineering services for battery and system development. Its published applications include commercial, industrial and utility storage, alongside specialised installations. A Sunnyvale prototyping project used second-life Nissan Leaf battery modules for an energy storage system supporting EV charging and load shifting. This is evidence of Nuvation’s own integration work, not a claim that Nissan is a customer or that the prototype is a current catalogue battery. The example illustrates the engineering between individual battery modules and a functioning storage installation, including monitoring, protection and coordination with external power equipment.
Nuvation Energy is a brand of Nuvation Research Corporation, alongside Nuvation Engineering. The parent description dates the corporation to 1997 and identifies US and Canadian operations. Nuvation announced the Energy brand launch in March 2017; this is the brand milestone, not a claim of separate legal incorporation. The business has headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, with research and development in Waterloo, Ontario. Its leadership page identifies Michael Worry as CEO and CTO, Michael Hermann as COO, and Gwyneth Saldanha as vice president of engineering and general manager. This combines a product business with a longer-established engineering organisation.
