Summary

Best for
German, Austrian and Swiss projects that want one supplier for the battery system, its controller, commissioning and long-term maintenance, from about 1 MWh to tens of MWh.
Less suited to
Residential storage, or buyers who want to pick their own battery controller: every scalepac ships with the INTILION Application Unit, and published references are concentrated in the DACH region.
Deployment
Outdoor all-in-one cabinets (scalepac) or containerised plants with medium-voltage switchgear and transformer (scalecube), delivered as equipment or as an EPC project with an operations and maintenance contract.
Data in
Battery, inverter and site values through the INTILION Control Unit and Application Unit; the scalepac customer interface uses Modbus TCP/IP, with IEC 60870-5-101 and 60870-5-104 for grid operators.
Pricing
Not published; systems are quoted per project.

Overview

INTILION was set up in 2019 to bring together the lithium-ion work of the HOPPECKE Group, the family-owned battery maker best known for lead-acid industrial and rail batteries. Its company history traces that work back to 2008, when HOPPECKE Advanced Battery Technology started on lithium-ion cells in Zwickau, then to stationary storage in 2013 and system integration from 2016. The first large projects for utilities and municipal energy companies followed in 2020.

The company positions itself as a storage supplier that owns the control layer as well as the hardware. Both product families run under its own INTILION Application Unit, and the same organisation plans, builds and maintains the plant. That makes INTILION closer to a system integrator with its own products than to a cell or container vendor. The trade-off is that the battery, controller and service contract come as one package.

In October 2026 INTILION and CATL signed a memorandum of understanding to deploy 3 GWh of CATL's Tener sodium-ion storage in Germany, Austria and Switzerland over five years, extending a cooperation that had already produced more than 30 projects in Germany since 2022.

Offering

INTILION sells two battery families and the services around them, listed on its products page.

scalecube

scalecube is the utility-scale line: lithium-ion storage in containers with integrated climate control, sized in defined 8 MWh increments. The scope includes the inverter, transformer, medium-voltage switchgear and low-voltage distribution, so a plant arrives ready for a grid connection. INTILION names frequency control, spot and ancillary-service markets, grid relief and charging infrastructure as its applications.

scalepac

scalepac is the commercial and industrial line: an outdoor all-in-one unit with battery, inverter, air conditioning, battery management and multi-level fire protection in one IP54 enclosure. The 2025 brochure builds complete systems from four to eight 254 kWh LFP units, 1.016 to 2.032 MWh nominal and 500 to 1,000 kVA, and the Application Unit can supervise up to 16 units. Uses include peak shaving, self-consumption, EV charging support and energy trading.

Services

Planning and concept work covers system design and grid-connection planning; EPC and commissioning takes a project through to stable grid operation; operations and maintenance adds monitoring, preventive maintenance and remote service. A premium service package guarantees 97% availability or more. Prices are on request.

Products and platforms

  1. INTILION Application Unit (IAU)

    Storage controller

Central control layer that runs the storage applications, coordinates energy flows and connects energy management, trading platforms and grid operators.7

  2. INTILION Control Unit (ICU)

    System interface

Technical interface between battery system, inverters and the Application Unit, handling inverter control, data acquisition and monitoring.7

Technology

INTILION splits control into two layers, described on its control systems page. The INTILION Control Unit (ICU) is the technical interface to the battery system and inverters: it controls the inverters, acquires data and monitors the components. Above it, the INTILION Application Unit (IAU) runs the storage applications (peak shaving, self-consumption optimisation, multi-use operation, frequency and voltage support), coordinates energy flows and connects external energy management systems and trading platforms. INTILION states that the IAU and ICU can serve as a certified plant controller (EZA-Regler) for grid-code-compliant operation in Germany.

The scalepac brochure names Modbus TCP/IP for the customer interface of the Application Unit, alongside remote-control protocols and a cloud connection, and IEC 60870-5-101 and 60870-5-104 for individual grid-operator integration. The IAU therefore presents separate interfaces to the site owner, the energy trader, generation plants and the grid operator, and the project point list defines which values each one sees.

The scalepac uses prismatic 306 Ah LFP cells, with more than 6,000 cycles stated and 90% usable depth of discharge. Cells come from tier 1 suppliers rather than INTILION's own production. Safety equipment in the enclosure includes smoke and heat detection, aerosol extinguishing, a dry-pipe water connection and a pressure relief valve, and all systems carry gas detection and thermal management.

Customers

INTILION's largest published order came from Deutsche Telekom. In April 2023 PASM Power & Air Condition Solution Management, the Telekom subsidiary that supplies the group's energy in Germany, ordered about 60 MWh of scalecube storage as backup power for data centres: roughly 26 MWh each in Hanover and Bamberg and 6 MWh in Münster. INTILION's own reference list gives the three systems as 9 MW / 58 MWh in total.

The same reference list names a 25 MW / 65 MWh plant for Primeo Energie in Kappel, Switzerland, which is being expanded to about 30 MW / 80 MWh, and a 10 MW / 20 MWh system in Halle (Saale) delivered as an EPC project for CCE.

In April 2026 Terra One signed the EPC contract for a 15 MW / 30 MWh stand-alone storage plant in Tangerhütte, Saxony-Anhalt, in the Avacon network area. Construction is due to start in July 2026, with commissioning at the end of the year, and Terra One will market the plant through its own trading platform. Both companies describe it as the start of a wider cooperation on large storage plants.

Markets

INTILION's published projects are in Germany and Switzerland, and its October 2026 sodium-ion agreement with CATL targets grid-scale, commercial and industrial projects in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Its customers fall into three groups: utilities and municipal energy companies running storage for grid services and trading, developers and investors building stand-alone plants, and industrial or critical-infrastructure operators that want backup power and peak shaving on their own site.

Channels include partnerships with project builders. In 2021 INTILION and GOLDBECK SOLAR agreed to offer standard PV-plus-storage packages for commercial, industrial and ground-mounted solar, with GOLDBECK SOLAR as general contractor and joint bids for tenders. That announcement also noted access to about 300 service technicians across Europe through the HOPPECKE Group, which is the basis of INTILION's service reach outside its own staff.

In 2026 the company counts more than 500 MWh installed and more than 200 authorised service technicians.

Company

INTILION GmbH is registered at the Paderborn local court under HRB 18295, with its office at Wollmarktstraße 115c, Paderborn, according to its legal notice. The same notice names Hubertus Jakobi as CEO and Carl Zoellner as CCO. INTILION's history page records a strategic realignment with a new management team in 2026. Earlier trade coverage, including the 2023 Telekom order, quotes Dr. André Haubrock as CEO.

The company belongs to the HOPPECKE Group. GOLDBECK SOLAR's 2021 announcement described it as a wholly owned subsidiary of Accumulatorenwerke HOPPECKE Carl Zoellner & Sohn GmbH. By 2023 the sole shareholder was HOPPECKE Rail Systems GmbH, itself a HOPPECKE subsidiary.

In summer 2023 INTILION, then an Aktiengesellschaft, prepared a listing on the Prime Standard of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, with new shares and a partial sale by its shareholder. On 10 July 2023 the company and its shareholder postponed the offering, saying that an appropriate valuation could not be achieved in the capital market at the time. The legal notice now lists the company as a GmbH. Revenue and headcount are not published.
