EpiSensor was selected as a finalist in the sustainability category of The Irish Times Innovation Awards 2024. The entry was the demand response controller.
What was entered
The controller monitors grid frequency and power at a customer's site and acts on what it measures, so a high-consumption site such as a data centre can reduce its draw on the grid when the grid is under pressure. That makes room for more intermittent renewable generation and reduces the call on carbon-intensive peaking plant. The Demand Response Controller (ZDR) is designed and manufactured by EpiSensor in Ireland.
It is used in demand response and virtual power plant programmes internationally. Recent deployments include a project with the demand response aggregator Enel X, where the ZDR was installed across 2,500 scooter battery-swapping stations in Taiwan, and data centre projects with Microsoft and Digital Realty.
About the awards
The Irish Times Innovation Awards recognise service, product and operational innovations from across the island of Ireland. Finalists are selected by an independent panel of judges, and the overall Innovation of the Year is chosen from the category finalists. EpiSensor was one of three finalists in the sustainability category. The winners were announced at a ceremony in Dublin on 13 November 2024.
