Gogoro battery swapping joins Enel X’s virtual power plant in Taiwan

EpiSensor hardware connects Gogoro smart batteries and battery-swapping GoStations into Enel X’s virtual power plant in Taiwan.

EpiSensor, which builds IoT infrastructure for the sustainable energy transition, has brought 2,500 Gogoro battery-swapping stations into Enel X’s virtual power plant (VPP) in Taiwan. Gogoro’s smart batteries and swapping stations across Taiwan are aggregated into Enel X’s VPP.

As an Enel X technology partner, EpiSensor provided the measurement and control layer that lets the battery-swapping network take part in the VPP.

What the hardware does

  • Sensors on thousands of remote sites monitor power consumption and react to frequency oscillations on the grid within a fraction of a second.
  • Accurate data is securely delivered to Enel X’s IoT platform for aggregation and analysis, and in turn, made available to Taiwan’s transmission system operator in real time.
  • Shifting demand this way displaces generation that would otherwise be called on at peak.

EpiSensor has worked with Enel X on several flexibility programmes, of which this is the most unusual in the type of asset involved.

In 2023 EpiSensor won Technology Innovation of the Year at the Technology Ireland Industry Awards, run by Technology Ireland, the Ibec trade association for the technology sector. The award was for the demand response controller used in this programme and in other demand flexibility projects.
