Overview

Smappee combines energy measurement with management of building loads and electric-vehicle charging. Its Infinity system is modular: measurement components, communication gateways and optional inputs can be selected around the installation. The equipment is intended to explain energy flows across a home or building rather than show only a single utility total.

The Power Box measures phase voltages, receives current-sensor measurements and calculates power and energy. The gateway then determines how those readings reach applications and other systems. That separation is important when comparing configurations: the measurement hardware and the availability of local software interfaces are related, but they are not the same product feature.

Offering

The Power Box description identifies a DIN-rail component that supplies the system and supports measurements for up to 28 loads. It makes calculated information available through Modbus RTU. The Input Module adds four digital channels for pulse counting or state changes, with up to ten modules daisy-chained through RJ10 connections.

Smappee explicitly limits that Input Module setup to an Infinity installation using a Genius gateway, rather than the Connect series. The current Infinity range also includes P1 and 4G connection options. Selecting the gateway consequently affects both the supported extensions and the route by which measurements are made available to another application.

Technology

Smappee's local MQTT comparison distinguishes original Genius units from Genius Flex. The original Genius has a local broker and can publish to another broker, but its local feed does not include charger data. Genius Flex provides its own broker after installation of the MQTT integration; it does not publish onward to an external broker in the same way.

The Genius Flex interface documentation covers metering and EV Line device topics, authenticated access and per-user command permissions. Connect and P1 do not independently provide local MQTT. These documented differences make the gateway model a practical integration decision, rather than treating MQTT as a uniform brand-wide capability.

Markets

The Infinity product description combines energy visibility with dynamic load balancing and overload protection. Those functions are relevant when EV charging is added to a building already carrying other loads, or when local solar generation changes the balance between importing and exporting electricity. The modular arrangement allows the measurement plan to follow the circuits and energy flows that matter at the site.

Smappee's company overview extends that approach across homes, businesses and public charging infrastructure. It describes coordination of generation, storage and consumption as the broader application. The actual third-party connection still follows the selected gateway and documented device interface, while the charging and energy-management functions remain part of Smappee's wider system offering.

Company

Smappee traces its activity to 2012 in its company history, which identifies Stefan Grosjean as founder and Chief Executive Officer. The company is based at the Snowball cleantech site in Harelbeke, Belgium. Its account describes the site as a working demonstration incorporating solar generation, battery storage, charging points and building energy management.

The business now combines modular measurement equipment, smart charging and an energy-management platform. Its integration documentation also reflects successive gateway generations, including the original Genius and the newer Genius Flex. That product evolution has expanded local integration options while retaining distinct capabilities for each hardware family, rather than making earlier documentation automatically applicable to every current device.
