Project context

This was a proof of concept at Grouselodge wind park, exploring the relationship between generation and consumption, not an estate-wide commercial rollout.

The Project

ESB worked with Dell Technologies, VMware and EpiSensor on a proof of concept for renewable energy tokenisation. The project explored how more detailed generation data could support matching renewable electricity with consumption by commercial and industrial customers.

The Data Requirement

The trial used ESB's Grouselodge Wind Park in Co. Limerick, Ireland. Programme leads and technology partners needed accurate, granular measurements of electricity generation throughout the day, with access to the data away from the site.

ESB described the wider programme as an exploration of methods to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the Guarantees of Origin market mechanism, using energy intelligence from VMware Aria. EpiSensor's role was to provide the underlying measurements and a way for the partners to retrieve them.

Our Contribution

EpiSensor's ZEM three-phase electricity monitor measured generation from the wind turbine. An API-enabled Gateway made those readings available to ESB and VMware for offsite visualisation and analysis.

This separated measurement at the site from the partners' analysis tools: they could work with the generation data remotely and use the findings to inform further product development.

The openness to collaborate and determination to drive solutions shown by the EpiSensor team throughout this project was remarkable. We couldn’t have done it without their unwavering support!

What the Trial Established

ESB reported that the initial technical trial demonstrated the core hypotheses of verifiable, real-time renewable generation and consumption matching.

This case study describes that initial proof of concept. It demonstrates EpiSensor's contribution to the measurement and data-access layer; it does not establish a commercial rollout or a change to the Guarantees of Origin mechanism.
