Moxa supplies industrial networking and protocol gateways, including Modbus serial conversion and IEC 60870-5-101/104 integration.
Moxa supplies the network and protocol interfaces between industrial equipment and control systems. Its MGate 5114 addresses power-system protocol conversion, while the MGate MB3180/MB3280/MB3480 family provides a narrower Modbus serial-to-Ethernet path. The distinction makes the catalogue useful for projects that already have functioning field instruments but need a different communication interface.
A gateway transports or translates measurements; it does not establish the accuracy of the connected meter. Register definitions, point semantics and end-to-end validation remain part of commissioning after the physical network connection works.
The MB3180, MB3280 and MB3480 ordering table gives one, two and four RS232/422/485 serial ports respectively, with one Ethernet port. These models convert Modbus RTU/ASCII and Modbus TCP. Choose the model by the number of independent serial segments, not simply the number of instruments on one multidrop bus.
The MGate 5114 specification instead lists two Ethernet ports and one serial port, with Modbus RTU/ASCII/TCP and IEC 60870-5-101/104 conversion. Its supported protocol roles and power-oriented functions make it a different selection from a basic Modbus bridge.
The MGate 5114 product documentation identifies IEC 60870-5-101 master/slave, including balanced and unbalanced operation, and IEC 60870-5-104 client/server roles. It also names the corresponding Modbus client/master and server/slave roles. An integration design must match the role at each end as well as the protocol name.
The resource list includes separate protocol implementation conformance statements and a configuration guide for IEC 104 SCADA. Those documents support a point-by-point engineering review. IEC 61850 support must not be inferred from IEC 101/104 support: it is a different protocol requirement and is not claimed here for this model.
For existing energy meters on RS485, the MB3000 family page provides a straightforward comparison by serial-port count and operating limits. For a power SCADA interface, the MGate 5114 page provides protocol conversion, traffic monitoring and diagnostic facilities. The engineering question is whether the project needs transparent access to serial meters or a configured exchange between different application protocols.
Prove a small set of known measurements through the complete connection before expanding the point list. Preserve address conventions, scaling and invalid-data handling in that check. A successful TCP connection or an incrementing message counter alone does not show that the control system is receiving the intended engineering values.
This profile concerns Moxa's industrial connectivity business and its official product catalogue. The company profile and contact page are retained as identity references. The official milestones date the company foundation to 1987 and record the headquarters relocation to Xinzhuang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan.
The named gateway specifications are the basis of the comparison, rather than a company-wide protocol claim. Product lifecycle, firmware and security guidance should be reviewed for the exact ordered model using its resource page. No built-in EpiSensor integration or completed interoperability test is implied by the presence of a shared protocol.
