Solar, storage and charging in coordinated energy systems
Samsung SDI manufactures rechargeable batteries and ESS systems, including containerised Samsung Battery Box and batteries for data-centre backup.
Samsung SDI manufactures rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles, stationary storage and smaller devices, alongside electronic materials. Its ESS business adapts battery technology to grid, commercial and backup-power applications. That makes it relevant both as a component supplier inside another company's storage system and as the manufacturer of larger integrated battery equipment. The selection problem is therefore broader than choosing a battery chemistry: cell supply, rack design, enclosure safety and the surrounding power-conversion system occupy different parts of the installation. Samsung SDI's current storage products span several of those layers.
Samsung Battery Box, or SBB, packages cells, modules and racks inside a 20-foot container. Samsung SDI says the system was developed in 2023 and describes its Enhanced Direct Injection technology alongside abnormal-cell detection and lifetime monitoring. Its March 2026 announcement also introduces Samsung Battery Intelligence, an ESS fire-prevention software offering. These are specific system features rather than evidence that every Samsung cell includes the same protection arrangement. The ESS portfolio separately covers applications from residential and commercial storage to grid installations and uninterruptible-power-supply batteries, with different demands on sustained energy and short-duration power.
Li-ion batteries and real-time battery management for facility backup applications.6
The ESS description identifies real-time battery management of state of charge and state of health. These values describe available energy and battery condition, which are useful inputs to a storage controller but are not the same as the site's revenue-meter data. The SBB announcement adds detection of cell abnormalities and lifespan tracking at system level. Public product descriptions do not establish a common open register map or API across the range. An integrator should obtain the interface specification for the supplied battery-management and power-conversion configuration rather than infer communications from the Samsung name.
Samsung SDI's storage applications include utility and renewable integration, commercial installations and backup power for facilities such as data centres. The 2026 product announcement distinguishes a server battery-backup solution using cylindrical cells from the larger SBB container: one responds close to computing equipment, while the other forms part of a site's energy infrastructure. Its research overview separates battery research and product-development functions and covers both current lithium-ion technology and future chemistries. This helps readers distinguish available stationary-storage systems from research programmes that do not yet define an orderable project product.
The company history begins with Samsung-NEC's establishment in January 1970 and records its later development into the battery and materials business. The global locations directory identifies the headquarters in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea, with separate manufacturing and overseas operations. That identity is Samsung SDI Co., Ltd., not Samsung Electronics or a consumer-appliance division. The history also records an ESS battery supply agreement with Tesvolt, illustrating its role as a supplier within other storage manufacturers' systems. Its corporate introduction places energy and electronic materials together within the current business.
