An energy management system for the price of a Raspberry Pi

Edge is the software that runs on EpiSensor's commercial Gateway. Install it on a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5, connect one Modbus meter or Zigbee device, and you have live dashboards, analysis and alerts on your own network. That device is free to evaluate and test, with no cloud account and no subscription.

An Edge dashboard comparing a site's mains power with one compressor over 30 days, with current readings and their recent history beside the chart.
An Edge dashboard with two meters: the mains incomer and one compressor, over 30 days.
  • Runs on the Pi, on your network, with your data kept on site.
  • The same Edge as on an EpiSensor Gateway, with every dashboard, analysis and alerting tool.

What Edge does on a Raspberry Pi

Nothing is removed for the free device. You get the application EpiSensor installs on its Gateways.

More about Edge

Dashboards

Live values, trend charts, gauges and equipment status, arranged for your team or a shared screen.

Alerts and automation

Act on a threshold, a schedule or a change of state: email or text the right people, call a webhook or switch a device. Rules run on the Pi.

Analysis

Compare sensors and periods in one workspace, then export the data you selected.

Calculated values

Combine readings into new values, such as cost or energy per unit produced, and use them like any other reading.

Buildings and assets

Organise readings by building, floor, room and asset, so each value sits where it is measured.

Your data, on your terms

Send data on over MQTTS, HTTPS, files or the API, or serve it to a building management system as a Modbus server.

Set it up from your own computer

System Manager is the free desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux that builds and looks after EpiSensor Gateways. It turns the Pi into one.

  1. Download System Manager

Sign in with your email address. We send a six-digit code; there is no password to create.

  2. Write the card and start the Pi

System Manager writes Ubuntu Server to a microSD card, sets up Ethernet or Wi-Fi and checks the card once it is written. Put it in the Pi and power it on.

  3. Install Edge and add your device

From the same app. Then read a Modbus meter with the register wizard, or pair a Zigbee device through a USB radio, and build your first dashboard.

What you need

A Raspberry Pi and a device to read. Everything else is software.

  • A Raspberry Pi 4 or 5, with its power supply
  • A microSD card
  • A computer running Windows, macOS or Linux, for System Manager
  • Your network: Ethernet, or Wi-Fi set up when the card is written

One device to read

  • A Modbus meter on your network, read with up to 32 registers
  • Or a Zigbee 3.0 device, through a USB Zigbee radio such as the SONOFF ZBDongle-E

Free for one device, and how it grows

Evaluate with one meter on a Pi. For a production site, move to an EpiSensor Gateway, or license Edge on hardware with industrial-grade storage.

Common questions

Is it really free?

Is it really free?

Yes, for one device from another manufacturer. System Manager, Edge and the licence for that device cost nothing, and there is no subscription. You buy the Raspberry Pi, the card and, for Zigbee, a USB radio. To connect more devices, add a licence for each one.

Can I use it at work?

Can I use it at work?

We do not recommend it for any production site. A Raspberry Pi runs from a microSD card, which can wear out. For production, use an EpiSensor Gateway, or license Edge on hardware with industrial-grade storage.

Does it need the cloud?

Does it need the cloud?

No. Edge runs on the Pi and keeps your data on site, and you open it in a browser on your network. System Manager needs an internet connection to download Ubuntu and Edge while you set up. Edge can send data to your own platform over MQTTS or HTTPS if you want it to.

Which devices can I connect?

Which devices can I connect?

A Modbus meter or other Modbus device read with up to 32 registers, or a Zigbee 3.0 device through a USB Zigbee radio. The Device Directory lists hundreds of meters, sensors and controllers with what Edge reads from each.

Which Raspberry Pi do I need?

Which Raspberry Pi do I need?

A Raspberry Pi 4 or a Raspberry Pi 5, with its power supply and a microSD card. System Manager recognises both boards.

What happens when I need more?

What happens when I need more?

Add a licence for each extra device, or move to an EpiSensor Gateway, which comes with Edge installed and reads EpiSensor devices with no licence. Core manages many Gateways from one place.

Edge pricing

Edge comes with every EpiSensor Gateway. You only pay for devices from other manufacturers, or to run Edge on hardware of your own.

Run it on a Raspberry Pi

System Manager turns a Raspberry Pi into a Gateway running Edge, with every dashboard, analysis and alerting tool, free for one device: a Modbus meter of up to 32 registers, or a Zigbee device. It runs from a microSD card, so we do not recommend it for any production site.
