HiveMQ: MQTT brokers, industrial protocol adapters and governed data streams

Overview

HiveMQ provides MQTT messaging infrastructure for moving data between devices, site systems and enterprise applications. Its enterprise broker documentation covers deployment and the exchange of MQTT messages, while the local HiveMQ Edge product adds industrial protocol adapters. The current company presentation places that messaging foundation within a broader industrial-data offering. Its products distinguish message transport from data validation and application use: a broker distributes publications to subscribers, and optional governance functions inspect or transform the content. Managed cloud and self-managed deployments provide different operational models for the same general messaging role.

Offering

HiveMQ Edge combines an MQTT broker with adapters for industrial equipment. The current documentation lists OPC UA, Modbus, Siemens S7, BACnet, Beckhoff ADS, EtherNet/IP, HTTP and file input, plus simulation facilities. It supports MQTT 3.1, 3.1.1 and 5 over TCP, TLS and WebSocket transports. An MQTT bridge links local systems to another broker. The package runs on Linux, macOS or Windows, with Linux recommended. Its open-source extension SDK supports authentication, authorisation, packet interception and custom adapters, allowing protocol-specific collection and MQTT message handling to be configured as separate parts of a site deployment.

Technology

The HiveMQ Edge documentation explicitly separates free open-source functions from commercial features requiring a licence. Data Hub on Edge adds schemas, validation, transformation and client-behaviour enforcement. Offline buffering is also listed as a commercial capability, so it should not be assumed from the presence of the free broker. The same distinction applies to southbound MQTT-to-equipment commands, currently documented for the OPC-UA adapter. This feature-level boundary is useful when comparing a simple protocol-to-MQTT bridge with a managed site system that must retain data through outages and govern both incoming telemetry and outgoing commands.

Standards and security evidence

The core broker supports MQTT 3.1, 3.1.1 and 5.0, and the Community Edition is Apache 2.0 open source, as is the HiveMQ Edge code. The Eclipse Foundation's Sparkplug compatible list includes the Community and Professional broker editions and the Sparkplug Aware extension; HiveMQ announced the listing in December 2022 and says it helped write the Sparkplug 3.0 compatibility kit. The current Edge documentation adds MTConnect and database adapters and an ISA-95 style unified namespace in the open-source package, and it runs on JDK 25 from release 2026.8.

On the service side, the security page lists ISO/IEC 27001:2022, a CSA STAR registry entry, TISAX and SOC 2, and describes TLS, OCSP stapling, extension-based role access control and an audit log for Control Center. The company reports a SOC 2 Type II report covering all five trust criteria, issued by Insight Assurance in July 2024. The Cloud Security Alliance registry entry for HiveMQ Cloud shows a Level 2 STAR Certification renewed on 24 November 2025, which is third-party evidence rather than a self-declaration.

Customers

HiveMQ's company page names Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Siemens, Liberty Global and Eli Lilly as users of its platform, and the 2021 seed-round coverage listed BMW, Daimler, Deutsche Telekom, Liberty Global, Moen, Siemens and ZF. Its case study library is weighted to connected vehicles and manufacturing, with energy and utility entries for Anglian Water, Faith Technologies and Geobrugg, a chemical-park case for Currenta and medical-device cases such as Becklar and Braveheart Wireless.

These are company-published references. HiveMQ does not publish a customer count, connection totals or deployment sizes across its base, so the logos show the kind of buyer it serves rather than how many sites run on it. The Series A announcement by Molten Ventures in May 2022 stated that more than half of revenue then came from US companies, which matches the weight of US manufacturing and automotive names in the case studies. Energy buyers are a minority of the published references, and none describes a metering estate or building portfolio in detail.

Markets

The enterprise broker getting-started guide covers deployment choices and initial publish/subscribe operation, with separate documentation for production containers and clustering. HiveMQ's pricing page distinguishes managed cloud tiers from self-managed and enterprise offerings. Capacity, support and integrations, including access to the broker REST API, depend on the chosen plan. The local Edge package has its own commercial entitlement boundary. Together these products can connect site producers, central brokers and downstream applications, but transport capacity, data-governance functions and operational support are separate parts of the commercial and technical design.

Company

HiveMQ's founding history identifies Christian Götz, Dominik Obermaier and Christoph Schäbel as founders in 2012. Its current leadership page names Barry Libert as Chairman and CEO and Magnus McCune as CTO, superseding older management descriptions. The legal page identifies HiveMQ GmbH at Friedrichstrasse 68 in Berlin and HiveMQ Inc. in Middletown, Delaware. Those current legal addresses differ from older material referencing Landshut. The company maintains documentation for broker software, local protocol integration and cloud services, with separate legal terms according to the contracting entity and the way customers purchase the service. Its official company profile identifies Berlin, Germany as headquarters.

Funding and direction

HiveMQ raised €9.3 million in a May 2021 seed round led by Earlybird and Senovo, then €40 million in a Series A led by Molten Ventures in May 2022, with Mubadala Capital and Illusian joining, for €49.3 million in total. No later priced round has been announced. In February 2025 the company introduced HiveMQ Pulse, a data-intelligence layer built around a unified namespace, in private preview. On 16 October 2025 it announced a strategic shift towards an industrial AI platform, alongside a new chairman and chief executive and new revenue and product leads. The MQTT broker and Edge products remain the base of that plan, but buyers choosing HiveMQ for messaging alone should expect product packaging to keep changing.
