Unlocking New Opportunities

This is no ordinary case study. Here, we showcase a groundbreaking programme in renewable energy, led by ESB, in partnership with Dell Technologies, VMware and EpiSensor, that aims to harness the power of onshore wind to drive future renewable energy tokenization programmes for their commercial and industrial customers. Having excelled through the initial Proof of Concept stage, this programme demonstrates vast potential, both in accelerating the energy transition and in supporting organisations to advance their Net Zero targets. This first-of-its-kind project also unlocked a new and exciting application for EpiSensor IoT technology, one that we look forward to exploring further with current and future partners.

Our Partner

ESB is Ireland’s longest-established energy company. Operating across the electricity market from generation to transmission, distribution and supply, ESB is the most prominent energy utility in Ireland. ESB also drives advancements in a variety of aligned sectors, such as telecommunications, EV charging, domestic energy retrofits and more. As an organisation, they are dedicated to providing clean, renewable energy sources to the island of Ireland and they are committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040.

About the Programme

ESB approached EpiSensor to understand if it was possible to derive accurate, real-time, granular, insights from ESB’s Grouselodge Wind Park, based in Co. Limerick, Ireland. As part of a broader concept study on renewable energy tokenization for the commercial and industrial sectors, it was vital for ESB’s programme leads and partners to obtain more granular and detailed information from the site, in real-time.

The Challenge

As described by ESB: “The green data project emerged through collective analysis of the carbon credit markets to provide organisations with the ability to improve their green credentials. Through the energy intelligence provided by VMware Aria, the project aims to explore new methods that will provide increased accuracy and efficiency of the current ‘Guarantee of Origins’ market mechanism which is in place throughout the EU. This can thereby help to address a number of ESG challenges faced by organisations.”

Our Contribution

Demonstrating a new and groundbreaking application of EpiSensor technology, ESB leveraged our 3-phase electricity monitor and powerful API-enabled Gateway to derive granular energy generation insights from the wind turbine throughout the day. Leveraging the API, the required data was then visualised and analysed offsite by both ESB programme leads and VMware, empowering them to make future decisions on product development.

The Result

According to ESB:”EpiSensor technology has enabled the initial technical trial proving the core hypotheses of verifiable real-time renewable energy generation and consumption matching.”

“We are proud to be a part of this important partnership which can help like-minded organisations on their journey to Net Zero. EpiSensor’s technology can enable us to provide real-time information through this API-enabled and data-driven solution that will allow our various stakeholders to analyse data remotely. We are delighted to continue to work with their team into the future and I am looking forward to seeing how this can support the delivery of our Net Zero by 2040 strategy.”

From EpiSensor’s perspective, the success of the initial PoC is an exciting step forward in demonstrating how our advanced IoT solutions can be integral in driving forward the global shift towards renewable energy and more intelligent, responsive energy systems.

"We're delighted to support ESB's leadership and innovation in commercial sustainable energy solutions. Facilitating real-time data insights directly from the Grouselodge Wind Park to ESB's programme leads and partners using EpiSensor IoT technology is groundbreaking. We're excited to see how this programme evolves!".
