Enel X is the world’s leading demand response provider with around 8.5 GW of flexible load deployed across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. Through Demand Response programs, utilities or grid operators pay commercial and industrial consumers to modulate their energy consumption in response to peaks in electricity demand. Part of the Enel Group, Enel X provides next generation products and services aimed at the energy transformation in homes, cities and businesses, with a view to sustainable development.

Project

Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) partnered with Enel X in 2018 and signed up to deliver flexible capacity to Ireland’s grid services programmes, which are designed to ensure the security and stability of electricity supply for everyone on the island of Ireland.

The partnership enabled DAA to enrol 8MW of flexible capacity into the more traditional Integrated Single Electricity Market (I-SEM) and 3MW of faster responding flexibility into the “Delivering a Secure Sustainable Electricity System” – or DS3 – programme. Participation in demand response aligns their asset management and sustainability objectives with EirGrid’s grid balancing schemes.

Our Contribution

To participate in the DS3 programme, EpiSensor’s ZDR hardware is installed in Dublin Airport and monitors grid frequency in real-time. Its technology enables Dublin Airport to automatically move to backup generation if a frequency event is detected, which in turn supports the electricity grid in Ireland allowing higher percentages of renewable generation from wind and solar.

"EpiSensor is proud for our technology to be part of the Enel X Demand Response offering, enabling Ireland’s grid resilience while furthering the operational resilience and sustainability of DAA’s operations."
