In this week’s leadership spotlight, we delve into the professional journey of John Ginnane, our Head of Operations and Support. Since joining EpiSensor in October 2016, John has played a pivotal role in shaping our operational excellence and customer experience. Our partners and customers value John’s knowledge and ‘can-do’ approach immensely and we are thrilled to share more about him and his vision for the future!

John, could you share an overview of your role at EpiSensor?

Certainly. Since joining the company in 2016, I’ve had the privilege of advancing my career, evolving into my current role as Head of Operations and Support. My primary responsibility is to ensure that we deliver systems architecture that not only meets but exceeds, the expectations of our partners and customers. This involves continuous engagement to scale systems efficiently and incorporate new meters and sensors as required. A critical aspect of my role is ensuring that support queries are addressed promptly and effectively. I also ensure valuable expertise is readily available to our partners and customers so that they can run their energy management programmes effectively and without delay.

What excites you about working in the energy sector?

The energy sector is at the forefront of technological innovation, from renewable energy technologies like solar and wind to advancements in battery storage, smart grid technologies, IoT, carbon capture, and storage. This makes the industry hugely exciting to be a part of and EpiSensor is at the heart of this current wave of innovation. Working in an environment where our efforts have a tangible impact on accelerating the energy transition is also hugely rewarding.

What do you enjoy most about working at EpiSensor?

Two aspects stand out above all else: the pace of innovation and the strength of our team. We’re continuously advancing our technology to meet the ever-changing needs of the industry. This was demonstrated recently with the launch of our next-generation ZDR (Demand Response Controller) and ZEM (Wireless Electricity Monitor), and new software developments, Edge Flows and Edge Snaps. These technological advancements would not be possible without the knowledge, collaborative approach, and experience of our team.

We work together consistently to set new standards of excellence in IoT technology for the energy sector and that’s exciting!

What does the future look like for EpiSensor?

We’re continuously building on the strength of our current partnerships and attracting new partners. This strong growth trajectory is set to continue throughout the remainder of 2024 and into 2025/2026. We’re also continuously finding new use cases for our technology – you’ll find an example of this in our most recent case study with ESB, where we installed our technology at a wind farm in Limerick, Ireland, to support a proof of concept study on energy tokenisation. The result was real-time energy data-sharing between a wind farm and a large-scale data centre. We have some equally exciting projects in the pipeline that we can’t wait to share more about!

Where would we find you when you are not driving the transition to sustainable energy?

When I’m not working or spending time with my young family, you’ll find me long-distance running. It’s not just a hobby for me, as I set ambitious goals and invest time and effort into my training. However, I gravitate towards anything sport-related. You could also find me cheering on my beloved Kildysart and Clare GAA.
