EpiSensor has been selected as a finalist in the Sustainability category of The Irish Times Innovation Awards 2024. Known for producing advanced IoT infrastructure for energy management, EpiSensor has been recognised in these prestigious awards for our Demand Response Controller, technology that can transform high-energy consumers like data centres into active grid participants, driving energy efficiency and sustainability. Our award-winning demand response controller facilitates real-time monitoring of grid frequency and power on customer sites, that’s dramatically easier to use than traditional alternatives, enabling high energy-consuming entities to dynamically reduce reliance on the grid during periods of high demand. This in turn facilitates the integration of renewable energy onto the grid, providing a ‘safety net’ for grid operators in times of need, and reducing reliance on carbon-intensive ‘peaker’ power plants.

“We’re delighted to be acknowledged by The Irish Times for our innovation in energy management. In the coming years, millions of energy ‘things’ will be connected to the Internet so they can participate in a new energy economy - one where they will be aware of conditions on the grid, price signals, and carbon intensity - rather than just consuming energy blindly. Traditional systems are just too difficult to work with - you need to be an expert to use them. To achieve mass market adoption and transition our electricity system to 100% clean, renewable energy - it’s essential that we make it easier, cheaper, and faster to set up that communications link between things that consume energy, and things that produce it.

EpiSensor has designed a technology platform with a consumer-class user experience while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, security, and reliability that our partners trust us to deliver - it’s an essential component of the energy transition”

Brendan CarrollCEO, EpiSensor

“This technology is particularly valuable in data centres and for high-energy-consuming industries such as manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and transport, including EV networks, where the technology has already proven its value at scale. We look forward to the awards ceremony on 13th November and are honoured to be recognised among Ireland’s most innovative companies.”

Designed and manufactured by EpiSensor in Ireland, the Demand Response Controller (ZDR) is widely adopted in demand response and Virtual Power Plant (VPP) programmes worldwide, supporting grid stability and helping organisations meet their sustainability targets. Recent applications include an extensive project with Enel X, the world’s largest demand response aggregator, where EpiSensor’s ZDR was deployed across 2,500 E-scooter charging stations in Taiwan, as well as multiple award-winning data centre projects in collaboration with Microsoft and Digital Realty.

About The Irish Times Innovation Awards The Irish Times Innovation Awards aim to recognise and promote the best service, product, or operational innovations throughout the island. The finalists were selected by an independent panel of judges to secure a place at the final and a chance to win the overall ‘Innovation of the Year’ award. Along with the prestige of winning, the overall winner will receive a UCD Smurfit Executive Development scholarship for three from a selection of their Executive Development short courses commencing in the 2024/2025 Academic Year. EpiSensor will be competing against two other finalists in their category. The winners of the competition will be announced at an awards ceremony in Dublin on Wednesday, 13th November 2024.
